Chapter One

I’m not sure what one does when faced with a very real and very dangerous looking vampire.  A person could scream certainly. Or cry. Or run as fast as she could. In my case, I kind of did all three of these things at once.

A strangled yelp came out of my mouth as I ducked to the right and tried to deek around him to the door.  I wasn’t fast enough, because well, he was a vampire, and they have lightening fast reflexes, and he grabbed my arm.  That was when the tears kind of welled in my eyes. I really didn’t want to die in this room, in this medieval Irish castle, without telling Jonathan how much I loved him.  Even if he was a vampire too and probably this guy’s relative.

Where are you going, Makayla?

Out?

But we haven’t even gotten to know each other yet.

No offense, dude, but I really don’t want to know you.

His grip on my arm tightened, and he leaned aggressively into my face.  You are really quite amusing.

Thanks. You should see my stand up routine.

He looked me up and down, and I had the distinct impression he was trying to decide if I would fit nicely into a sandwich with mayo.  I can understand what Jonathan sees in you.  You’re very tasty looking. His fangs distended even farther.  So far, he couldn’t close his mouth fully.

Whoop, there it is.

I guess the man was turned on.  Jonathan’s fangs always got longer when we were having sex.

If you really don’t mind, I would like to leave now.  Jonathan will be looking for me I’m sure.

Are you sure? his eyebrow raised in amusement. He has a lot of old flames here.

You mean his cousins.

He laughed. How do you think we keep the bloodlines pure?

I gaped at him. I don’t believe you. Although now I couldn’t get the image of Jonathan and the lovely Giselle getting it on out of my head. It was on a continual loop. Like a bad porn gif.

Oh luv, you have a lot to learn about vampires.  He leaned down and sniffed my neck.  Like you’re not wearing blue now are you?  To me that’s just a sign you’re fair game.

That’s bullshit, because I know you can smell Jonathan on me.  You already know we’re together.

He smiled. You’re clever.  You wouldn’t guess it by looking at you.

I glared at him. He was starting to piss me off.  Fuck you and fuck this little game you’re playing.

He sniffed my neck again. Why don’t I just bite you and end it then?

Try it dirt bag.  I pushed him back with all my might, and brought my knee up into his crotch.

It didn’t have the ultimate desired effect but it was enough for me to pull out of his grip and make it to the door. I opened it, and ran out into the hallway.  I didn’t waste time by looking over my shoulder to see if he was following, but booked it to the staircase and took them two at a time down to the party.  I nearly fell a couple of times, considering I was running in three inch heels.

Most of the party goers paid me no mind as I rushed into the ballroom, flushed and breathing heavy.  I scanned the room until I spied Jonathan in a corner talking to Giselle. Of course he would be, just to play with my already fragile state of mind.

I quickly walked toward him. He turned toward me as I approached.  He was smiling, but it quickly faded when he saw the state I was in.

Mak, what’s wrong?

I had to stop and take in a few deep breaths before I could talk.  Jonathan held my arm as I did, waiting patiently for me to speak.

Finally I was able to. I was attacked upstairs.

What? By who? His face instantly hardened, as did his eyes.

The ginger haired vampire I told you about.

Jonathan looked at Giselle.  Would you excuse us?

She tipped her head.  Of course.  And she walked off into the mingling crowd.

You’re telling me another vampire attacked you?

"Yes, that is what I am saying. The redhead. The one you
