Chapter One: The Children Were Nestled All Snug in Their Beds

We’re gonna ambush him, right here! I pointed at the pile of old blankets and sofa pillows on the big braided rug in front of the fireplace. I crossed my arms, blew the wayward curls from my eyes, and prepared for the typical five-year-old battle of wills. I was even ready to use the ultimate weapon in my limited arsenal, Grandma. My cousin William and I had been scheming and talking of nothing else since we both arrived at our grandparent’s house two days before.

Mama conceded without a fight, Okay, but you do know that Santa may come down the chimney, see you, and go right back up again. And he won’t leave any gifts. We didn’t hear anything after the word okay. Her warning fell on deaf ears and loud mouths. We cheered and jumped up and down. Suddenly, I was ensnared in the classic Cindy Lou Who trap. Mama’s long red flannel nightgown, the one I’d begged to wear, encircled my legs like a hungry python and I went crashing to the floor. My boney bottom hurt but I didn’t care. I was giddy with anticipation and excitement. I couldn’t believe I was about to see the real Santa Claus.

What’s going on in here, Grandma asked with a knowing smile. She walked cautiously across the polished oak floor, her well-worn house shoes flapping and slapping with each step.
