Matt Kratz

I was born in Cambridge, Massachussetts. After living in Columbus, Ohio, for a few years, I moved to Richardson, TX, in 1978, when my father got a job teaching at UT-Dallas. I switched schools a couple times before settling back into the Plano schools and graduated from Plano Senior HS in 1990, Midwestern State (BA in History) in 1995, and UT Dallas (MA) in 2008. I am an aspiring writer, and my interests include movies (especially those from New Zealand), photography, Australian & New Zealand Wildlife, birds, spectator sports (I love baseball and attend Dallas area ball games), and I love to travel. 3 Worlds Journey is my first novel, and I am currently working on more. I love letting my imagination go wild. Most of my stories and characters are based on what I read and what I thought of when I was younger.

3 Survivor Stories - Matt Kratz

    Prologue

He flipped through the stack of papers. He knew what they contained ahead of time, but he just wanted to make sure.

Perfect. He knew what to do now. He logged onto the computer and did the appropriate things. Everything would be taken care of soon.

As he logged off, he smiled frostily. It was done.

    Chapter I

    Kristy! I’m home!

Kristy Reser hurriedly switched off the player. Her roommate rolled his eyes in disbelief.

Watching THOSE again? he said as pretended to mock her.

Hey, being on American Idol was THAT important to me, she shot back. Surely you can understand that.

    It’s not like you won.

I placed third that year, she said. It was tough competition, and you have no idea how spiteful Simon Cowell was in person. You just saw him on the freaking television.

    Who won it that year?

A guy by the name of Jeffrey Wade Hermy. He now records by the name of Jeff Wade. By the way, don’t you rub it into me as to how much I watch these recordings. You always gaze at that autograph of Steve Jobs you got.

Don’t compare American Idol to computers. There is no comparison. I will admit that was a great honor though.

Gerald Carter had just gotten back home from his job as a computer consultant. He had met Steve Jobs during an internship at Apple right out of college. It was quite an honor, and he learned more from that than he did as a computer science major at Austin College. He learned all about how to work with people on computers in teams and Internet nooks and crannies. It was quite an experience, and he was very saddened to learn that Jobs had died.

So any news on a recording contract? Gerald asked her. Surely those must be pouring in by now. Even lower placed contestants than you got contracts sooner.

I did get offers, she reminded him.

    So what happened?

Technicalities kept preventing them from getting finalized.

Well, I’m sure one day, you won’t be saying that. Your ship will come in, just like mine did.

Meeting Steve Jobs and getting that internship did it for you. Stroke of freaking luck!

Hey, so was American Idol! You just weren’t able to capitalize fully on it. Just keep trying. That’s all I can say.

    I will.

Kristy finally turned off the player and headed off into the kitchen. No matter what anyone had said, she had actually enjoyed her time on American Idol. If Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken, and Kelly Clarkson had made it as far as they did, there was hope for her. She started to make herself a sandwich. Peanut butter and jelly-her favorite.

    Chapter II

Gerald was driving to work. Dougal Computers-he loved the name of that company.

He found himself thinking of how he had met Kristy. It was somewhere between their college graduations and her appearance on Idol. They were both looking for working-he as a computer person and she as an aspiring singer/entertainer, and they agreed to shack up as casual roommates till they could get their finances in order. He had found more success, but she was still making her own. He was proud of her.

They had never been anything more than just friends and intended to keep it that way due to differing ambitions.

Gerald finally arrived at work. He had been listening to songs by Alan Jackson and Miranda Lambert, his favorite artists, and his favorite morning show, the Tim and Tom Duo. They were on from 6-10 and were absolutely hilarious. Gerald loved it when they spoofed the recent political stories. Who wouldn’t love something like that?

As he walked into work, he began to sense that something wasn’t right. Everyone seemed to be looking at him funny.

Finally, when he sat down at his seat, he had to find out. He contacted one of his friends on the phone.

Johnny! he said. What’s up? I seem to be getting the ‘evil eye’ from everyone this morning.

It’s just a rumor going around, Johnny told him. We can talk about it later.

No, I want to know now, said Gerald. What is it?

Okay, here goes, said Johnny. And you’re not going to like this.

    *

After Gerald got home from work that day, he started to pace. He glanced uneasily at Kristy’s collection American Idol performance tapes and wondered how she’d take the news when she heard.

Was it true? Could she really have done it? Only one way to find out. I’ll ask as soon as she gets home and hear her side of it.

Kristy finally got home. She saw the worried look on Gerald’s face, and the smile she always greeted him with vanished promptly.

Something’s wrong, Gerald, I can tell, she said. Bad day at work?

I want you to be honest with me, he said.

    You know I always am.

Did you lie your way to get onto American Idol and into my life and this town?

Kristy gave him a shocked look. She had never seen him like
