    Scene 1

    Magical Cupid’s Oil

Stage shows a glorious park setting. Trees, flowers, birds, and they are singing, and nesting. Ah, it is springtime in the park and everyone seems very happy, except for a woman sitting on the park bench looking very lonely and sad, she is weeping. She is wearing a long, drab, black dress, that comes a little above her ankles. She is wearing a hat with a black veil over it covering her face. She has a shawl over her shoulders, black flat shoes, and white stockings on. This lady must be in mourning. Here comes a man, maybe he will cheer her up. He seems to be in a very cheerful mood.

Cheerful Man walks by the woman then he stops and turns around, he hears her crying.

Man- Say, is that the sounds of sorrow I hear, and on such a beautiful day.

The woman tries to ignore him, and she turns her back toward him. She is still crying and the man takes heart and sits next to her on the bench. The woman is very sad as she speaks to him.

Woman – Please, sir, leave me alone.

The man touches her hand caringly; she pulls it back abruptly upsetting him. He speaks to her softly.

Man – I am sorry, Ms. When I heard you crying, I had to stop...I mean well.

The woman is very upset as she speaks to him.

Woman – Do you, do you really mean well?

Man does not know what to say now; he stumbles with his words as he speaks to her.

Man – Well...yes, of course I do. I can see that I have upset you even more so... why don’t you let me buy you a cup of coffee? I will make it up to you, hey?"

The woman is a bit angry with the man now, as she speaks to him, she says...

Woman –Look, You don’t owe me anything, just please go. Don’t you understand, I want to be alone by myself?

The man is stunned at her tone, he tries to speak to her.

    Man – Why I...

The woman lifts her veil, and she looks him dead in his face, he looks disgusted. He quickly gets up off the bench and walks away very quickly without saying a word. The woman just sits there and cries. She pulls her veil back down over her face. A very happy little boy, about twelve years old, dressed in a nice suit, carrying flowers, and candy, and a little bottle of Magic Cupid’s Oil, he goes cheerfully over to the woman on the bench who is still weeping.

Boy –Hi, I’m Jerimiah, why are you so sad?

The woman looks up at the little boy, wiping her eyes under her veil with a tissue. The in a soft-spoken voice, she repeats his name softly aloud.

    Woman - Jerimiah?

Jerimiah - Why are you crying? Don’t you know it is almost Valentine’s Day? I am on my way to see Cindy, she is my girlfriend, I will ask her to be my valentine.

Jerimiah is shy for a moment as he continues.

Jerimiah – Well, she is sort of my girlfriend. She will be once I put my magic cupid’s oil on her.

Jerimiah takes a pretty, little, pink, and red bottle, out of his pocket, and he shows it to the woman.

    Jerimiah – See?

Woman – A cupid’s oil, you say? That is very nice Jerimiah, now please be on your way now.

    The woman is still sniffling.

Jerimiah – What’s wrong Ms., why are you so sad? Don’t you have a Valentine?

    Jerimiah sits beside her.

Woman – Who me, have a Valentine?

The woman laughs softly at Jerimiah’s question, and says...

Woman –" I’ve never had a Valentine, not in
