Author

O. Henry

O. Henry (1862–1910) was the pseudonym of American author William Sidney Porter. Arrested for embezzlement in 1895, he escaped the police and fled to Honduras, where he wrote Cabbages and Kings (1904). On his return to the United States, he was caught, and served three years before being released. He became one of the most popular short story authors in history, known for his wit, surprise endings, and relatable, everyman characters.

    O Henry was a master of the short-story format, and it's a pity that he's not regularly taught in high school any longer. This is the classic Christmas tale of sacrifice, love and giving. The date read here refers to when our book club discussed it; but I first read in the early 1960s and have read it several times since.

    Short and sweet book with four poignant stories with spiritual and emotional content. I am surprised that Tolstoy wrote a story with a Christian theme, for example.
    I discovered in this little book one of my favourite quotes by Henry Van Dyke, an author I had never heard of before:
    Who seeks for heaven alone to save his soul,
    May keep the path, but will not reach the goal;
    While he who walk in love may wander far,
    Yet God will bring him where the blessed are.

    And it is the correct time of year to read it, to put back the spiritual content into Christmas.
