About this ebook

“Something evil lurks in those woods.”

Malevolence introduces new characters into the series, namely, a ten-year-old boy, Michael. His bike rides into the woods opens a door to a fascinating and beautiful world . . . at first. But it is a world he soon wishes, he never unveiled. The only good thing about the woods is, Sarah—a girl he meets, around his age, who tries to help him understand the true meaning of the dark side of the woods. Michael begins to have strange visions and violent nightmares, leading his parents to seek help.

The line of help eventually leads to Father Lombardi, who in turn reaches out to his good friend, Dr. Joseph Rickettes. Joseph finds himself dealing with his own recurring nightmare about Andrea which seems to never end. After hearing Michael’s account of his dreams, things move fast and the doctor unknowingly opens another portal into the dark world that took his wife’s life—a dark and violent world he is not sure he is ready to face again.

    Moving Forward

Each night before his closed eyelids sent his mind into darkness, Joseph couldn’t help but wonder if he would become like his patients—a victim of his own mental afflictions. A prisoner of a world so dark, it swallowed every thought, emotion, and hope a person could have. He always wondered if his profession and his gift would catch up with him, somehow turn the tide and shift the karma, putting him on the other side of things. He remembered the old saying: ‘ The wheels of fate just keep on spinning.’

Keeping in touch with Claire and knowing she was doing well, with no after-effects in her new life, was a relief. Most importantly, Lily was oblivious to what took place with her mother in their old house. That was the best part and the thing that gave him peace of mind, allowing him to fall asleep at night.

Jack Shaw stayed with him, even after it was done with the thoughts of the knife coming down and narrowly missing him. Also, the fact that he had no control in the end—Claire was left to her own resources to not only survive, but to kill her tormentor. In his mind, the tall man was just as dangerous as Andrea’s demon.

Maybe enough time hadn’t passed for him since helping Claire rid herself of the tall man. Maybe he was psyching out the psychologist, or maybe Shaw will never die, and always remain embedded in the dark recesses of his mind. Maybe, he had no choice, and this was his life’s path, ultimately leading him to his only goal . . . his return encounter with the demon.

The red digits on the nightstand clock flashed, catching the corner of his eye. The clock read 3:00 a.m.—a time with which he was all-too-familiar.

The numbers burned into his eyes as he closed them and took a deep breath, determined to fall asleep and wake up in the morning without a visit from any monsters looking to claim his soul.

There wasn’t any paper to tear, or tape to rip, only a big red ribbon to untie, and now Michael could finally grab, hold, and ride his new bicycle.

His eyes sparkled with excitement. This wasn’t his first bike, two others had come and gone—the last one, the Red Machine, as he called it, was beat up, having seen its better days.

Now, for his tenth birthday, he was getting a brand new Mongoose trail bike, the best of the best. As the red ribbon floated to the ground, he grabbed the rubber handlebars and smiled big at his parents.

Anthony and Lisa Ramos knew they raised a good son and admired how he never grew out of his little boy's excitement at even the smallest things. His innocence as a child was a pleasure to witness each day and they took nothing for granted. They loved their son and were happy to give him a special birthday present—the new bike he had always wanted. The pride showed on their faces as they smiled back at Michael. Lisa’s smile slowly faded as she glanced over at the shelf holding a picture of Michael’s deceased brother, Eduardo. (Eddie as he was known)

Michael had almost no memories of his brother. The older he got, Anthony and Lisa knew he would start asking questions. The truth was, the circumstances of Eddie’s death, while unforgettable, were something they never talked about.

The hurt and pain of losing him always lingered during their happy times, especially this one, Michael’s tenth birthday. Their son, Eddie, died when he was ten. Michael, a bit of a surprise when Lisa became pregnant with him, was only three when his brother passed away. Eddie lived on only in his parent’s stories and accounts of his short life. They felt death was something to be forgotten, with the only remaining memories being a photo on a candlelit shelf serving as a shrine.

Can I take it for a ride? Michael asked, his joy almost too much to contain.

The sound of Michael’s voice broke Lisa from her thoughts. She smiled at him, having no idea what he asked.

Yes you can, as soon as it stops raining, his dad said, smiling.

Lisa smiled as shallow tears blurred her vision.

The chrome spokes sparkled as Michael rolled the bright green bike back and forth, listening for the click-click-click of the gears as their internal mechanisms fell into place in perfect harmony.

Anthony and Lisa saved the bike until his party was over, for their own private moment with their son. It was special to them and brought back memories of Eddie when they gave him a new bike on his tenth birthday. The boys weren’t identical in looks, but there was no doubt about their resemblance. An emotional moment for the Ramos family, each one reflecting in their own way.

The dark clouds parted before dusk and the sunlight beamed from the western sky, leaving Michael just enough time to take his bike for its first spin.

With his dad standing in the road and his mother on the steps of the porch, Michael waved—his new helmet snug on his head—and pedaled down the road from a standing position, too excited to take a seat.

His legs moved faster and faster, building up enough speed to finally take a seat and enjoy the bicycle’s smooth glide. He looked over his shoulder as the cool air rushed by his cheeks, and saw his dad still standing in the road, getting smaller and smaller.

    This bike is fast.

In the distance, he could see the park and wanted to ride there so bad, but without permission, he had to turn around and head back home.

As he neared his parents, he squeezed the brake handles to slow the bike, and came to a stop right in front of them.

Can I take it down to the park? he asked, excitement still etched on his face.

Anthony looked at Lisa, who looked down at Michael.

It’s just a little too late to go there alone. It’s almost dark now, she said.

Disappointed, Michael looked at his father.

Anthony knew Lisa was right, but winked at Michael and told him to go. But only there and right back, no hanging around.

Michael smiled big as his mom frowned.

Why did you do that? It’s going to be dark in ten minutes.

Anthony knew this was coming. Look. It’s his birthday and he is really excited about his bike. It will do no harm to let him go down there and back, will it? He smiled at her, hoping to lighten the mood, and pulled her close for a hug.

She resisted at first, then put her arms around him as she looked at Michael pedal off.

Michael made it to the park entrance in no time, gliding through the gate into the parking lot and around a Park Department truck. He loved riding his old
