As detective Paul Temple turns his hand to playwright, his leading lady Iris Archer pulls out shortly before the play is due to open and declares that she is heading for France.

However, shortly after her disappearance Paul Temple receives a guest at his Scottish holiday home – none other than that of Iris Archer.

The mystery deepens as Temple is asked by a young man to act as postmaster in delivering a letter. Meanwhile someone acting under the codename of Z4 seems to have control of events. Could this be Doctor Steiner, and just who is he? It is all up to Temple . . .

4/5I am fairly new to the world of Audio-books and found this a bit confusing at first. I had to listen to the first CD twice before I could work out who the characters were and which side they were on. One of the previous reviewers filled in a bit of the history of Paul Temple in their review, which really helped to explain some of the idiosyncracies that had confused me - I think a short piece of background to the characters and their history would have made my first listening much less confusing. While the story was a bit dated and James Bond-esque, the reading by Anthony Head made up for all the flaws in the plot and this CD has greatly eased the driving I've been doing this week. The numerous assorted voices were wonderful and brought to life a novel that I would not have chosen to read but thoroughly enjoyed listening to.The story was based around a spy ring, led by the mysterious Z4. Temple and his wife Steve (?!) stumble into the midst of murder and intrigue and escape from impossible situations as we race to the solution at the end - all in the best of taste!I will certainly be on the look-out for more audio-books read by Anthony Head and would be more than happy to hear more Paul Temple stories.
