- (5/5)I think Scott Barnard (No, not Scotty Barnhart of Count Basie Orchestra fame) covers all the trumpet techniques one will ever need, in this considerably short (91 page) book. If one can master all the facets covered inside it's covers, they will become a trumpet master. The only negative, if there is one, is that due to it's concise nature, usually one etude (study example) per technique, some may want to go on to a larger format book like Arban's, St. Jacomes, Ernest Williams or go to books by H.L. Clarke, Goldman, Shuebruk, Charlier, Marcel Bitsch, with many more specific etudes. That said there is a lot more covered here than almost any other book for trumpet I've seen and I've played for over 50 years with such artists as; Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, David Sanborn. Barnard covers classical and jazz basics, as well as, some advanced etudes with transposition etudes, as well! It gets boring playing the same books after some 20 years of playing, imagine 50! A welcome addition to my practice routine great writing and not the same old, same old! I expected it to be rehashed Hanon piano etudes, adapted for trumpet, it's not! Worth checking out!
