About this ebook

Author and editor of numerous children's books, Thornton W. Burgess was also a noted conservationist. In writing for youngsters he combined a gift for storytelling with his love of the outdoors, creating an entertaining menagerie of animals whose adventures he skillfully recounted in a series of charming fables. In them, he taught young readers about nature and encouraged them to love the "lesser folk in fur and feathers."
In this delightfully told tale, Burgess chronicles the escapades of Chatterer the Red Squirrel, who's known throughout the Green Forest as a mischief maker. Narrowly escaping the clutches of Shadow the Weasel and Redtail the Hawk, the bushy-tailed little fellow decides to leave the forest for a new home, only to learn that curiosity, carelessness, and mistrust can lead to a heap of troubles.
First published in 1915, this engaging story will charm readers of all ages — as well as young listeners.

    Introduction to the Dover Edition

THORNTON W. BURGESS, children’s author and naturalist, was born in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in 1874. As a child, he discovered the outdoor world by exploring the beaches, marshes and woods of Cape Cod. These boyhood memories became the foundation for his wonderful nature stories. His first children’s book, Old Mother West Wind, was published in 1910. This book was a collection of stories that he began to tell to his own son at bedtime. Mr. Burgess interested both children and adults in nature by creating charming animal characters such as Peter Rabbit and Reddy Fox, and putting them in exciting adventures.

Today, the Thornton W. Burgess Society continues to carry out the philosophies of Thornton W. Burgess’ stories. The Society operates the Green Briar Nature Center and the Thornton W. Burgess Museum in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and publishes periodic newsletters and bulletins to inspire reverence for wildlife and concern for the natural environment. The Society is a leading force in environmental education on Cape Cod.

The Adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel was first published in 1915. Chatterer is considered to be the mischief-maker of the Green Forest. His quick tongue seems to get him into trouble quite often. In this book, learn how his curiosity leads him to a trap that is not easy to escape from. Chatterer forms a special friendship with Farmer Brown’s boy. This collection of adventures has timeless appeal for children of all ages.

Chatterer the Red Squirrel Runs for His Life

CHATTERER THE RED SQUIRREL had been scolding because there was no excitement. He had even tried to make some excitement by waking Bobby Coon and making him so angry that Bobby had threatened to eat him alive. It had been great fun to dance around and call Bobby names and make fun of him. Oh, yes, it had been great fun. You see, he knew all the time that Bobby couldn’t catch him if he should try. But now things were different. Chatterer had all the excitement that he wanted. Indeed, he had more than he wanted. The truth is, Chatterer was running for his life, and he knew it.

It is a terrible thing, a very terrible thing to have to run for one’s life. Peter Rabbit knows all about it. He has run for his life often. Sometimes it has been Reddy Fox behind him, sometimes Bowser the Hound, and once or twice Old Man Coyote. Peter has known that on his long legs his life has depended, and more than once a terrible fear has filled his heart. But Peter has also known
