    CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

    It was a solemn crowd that gathered the next morning in front of the All Saints Episcopal Church: Winsome-Bradshaws and their intimates, a hundred or more, in a massive, black-suited crowd.  I recognized several—Elizabeth, Martin and Claudia, Barbara and her slick husband Hank Barklay, who was, quite inappropriately, snapping a mouthful of chewing gum. Most of the others I either didn’t recognize, or couldn't attach a name to. Based on the experience I’d already had, the truth was that I wasn’t looking forward to meeting seventy or eighty more of them.

    All these people, Jordan muttered, as he opened the passenger seat and extended his hand to help me out of the car.  I’ve never even met half of them.

    That’s kind of sad, don’t you think?

    He looked slightly surprised. Yeah. I suppose it is.

    What really bothers me, I added, "is that you have to suffer for it."

    Jordan stopped walking. He turned to me, his expression serious, his tone puzzled.  How’s that again?

    Well, I said slowly, looking for the words to express my meaning. You said their big problem is that they’re all isolated, right?

    That’s their choice, he said, the hostility clear in his tone.

    But ... didn’t you make the same choice yourself? 

    Jordan blinked.

    I’m not saying it was your fault, I clarified.  Your family helped shape everything about your personality.  I mean—we think we have free will, and of course, to an extent.  But in other ways, we’re really the products of our environment. And their environment is one thing no child can be held responsible for.

    Jordan was looking at with that crooked half-smile. I thought, sometimes, that that look meant I’d impressed him.

    All I’m saying, I concluded,
