Synopsis: A woman from Manchester manages to escape her abusive husband, just as she learns she’s pregnant; and trying to get as far away as she can, becomes a mail order bride to a farmer called Josh, in California. The trouble is – she cannot get up the nerve to tell him that she’s pregnant, and still married.

As Francesca Burton wiped the blood from her nose, she tried to manage a smile and meek apology. She knew if she did more than that then Clayton would surely strike her again. She had been married to him long enough to know how to act during one of these episodes and raising her arms in defense would only anger him, raising her voice would enrage him and if she dared to ever strike him in retaliation, she was sure he would kill her.

I’m so sorry. She said it with tears hiding behind her eyes but she dare not release them for her once beloved would view these as signs of weakness and he would not tolerate a weak woman. He was doing this for her own good. She had to be toughened up a bit and shown how the world really works.

They were once leaving the butcher’s shop and Clayton had lagged behind to talk with an old friend. She decided that since it was a nice, sunny day in Manchester that she would wait for him outside.

With her arms full of packages, a gentleman opened the door for her and as she walked out, she nodded to him and said, Thank you. When Clayton joined her outside as she smiled and looked upward, allowing the sun to kiss her face, he walked up behind her and grabbed her elbow, dragging her to the side of the building.

I guess you don’t think I saw that? If you want that bastard so bad, he can have you but you won’t be near as pretty for him, he told her before slapping her across her face with his palm then the other cheek with the back of his hand. It took him rambling on in a drunken state later that night for her to realize what he was even talking about or what she had done.

The mere gesture of kindness had led to a three day argument between the couple, for his insecurity always reared its head and he thought he had seen desire in the eye contact between his wife and the kind stranger.

Francesca and Clayton had married when she was only fifteen but she had been betrothed to him since she was nine. Her parents had five girls and the land taxes alone were taking everything they had. The sooner
