    Primal Nature of Africa

Karl found Africa exciting. Something in the scent of the land called out to the soul. Perhaps it was the naked, primal feel that permeated the air. And the Sahara was the most innate part of Africa. In the Sahara Karl had seen beasts of every kind. Herbivores and carnivores played the game of life and death here. Death to one meant life to the other. It was the way of nature.

Karl looked into the mirror. . A strapping handsome man looked back at him. Karl was in the prime of his youth - twenty eight years old, and life seemed like a beautiful song. As Karl combed his hair, he smiled at himself. Nature had been kind to him. Thick, full hair adorned his head. A thin sharp nose was set between two symmetrical eyes. His high cheekbones and strong jaw were typically cowboy-American.

This January morning, Karl was getting ready for his last day at Algiers. Tomorrow he would leave leisure behind and head for business at Cape Town, South Africa. His stay at the Kabasa had been enjoyable. The Kabasa was one of the best hotels Algiers had to offer. It had a gym, swimming pool, and everything else an American tourist could ask for. Most importantly, the food in the Blue Diamond restaurant in the Kabasa was fantastic.

The Blue Diamond was where Karl headed after his grooming. As he walked down the steps towards the Blue Diamond, Karl thought once more about the Sahara. He thought about life and death. Death was not something that happened in a moment. It was something that took a lifetime. Someday death would sweep him away too, like dust swept off the floor. A few more quick steps brought Karl to the Blue Diamond.

Karl sat down at one end of the dining hall. He could see the rest of the dining hall from there. There was something in his nature that made observation important to him He preferred to see than to be seen.

A waiter walked up to him. Sir, may I take your order? the waiter asked in perfect English - only a trace of the Nigerian accent lined his voice. Bacon and eggs, answered Karl. Bacon and eggs were his favorite food. Funnily, something hit Karl's thought-stream like an arrow. He
