I'll Have the Last Laugh - Dashunda Deas

    1

This is a story about a girl named Miya who was born in South Carolina. When she was growing up, people teased her and called her ugly. Her mother’s family treated her like trash. You see, she was born HIV positive, and that of course did not make life any easier. She was six years old when her mother passed away, but really it was her Grandmother who had raised her from the time she was born. Miya’s grandmother, Mrs. Kelly, would tell her stories about her mother. She would tell her how her mother was a professor at Middleton College and was a single parent of three kids before Miya was born. One day, her grandmother told her the story of how she came to be. One of her mother’s students, a young man named Paul had a big crush on her and would flirt with her all the time. Her mother never paid him any attention, she just treated him just like any of her other students. That was something Paul didn’t like, he wanted Ms. Wills’ attention. He started giving her gifts, but she would give them back. She didn’t want to mislead him. Paul didn’t stop there though, he was getting angry because she would always return the gifts. He then decided it was time to find out what he needed to do for her to fall in love with him because he was running out of ideas. Ms. Wills knew at that moment she and Paul needed to sit down and have a talk. She explained to him that he was her student, a very young student at that. She explained to him that he needed to stop, she understood that he had a crush on her, but she could never date one of her students. After the talk with Paul, he seemed to take it very well, better then she thought. He didn’t act upset or angry. When he came to class, he didn’t flirt anymore, he just did his work and left every day without any problems.

One night her mother was leaving work late because she’d had some tests to finish grading. Paul came up behind her as she was walking to her car and she jumped, asking him what he was doing out there at that time of night. He told her they needed to talk. She asked if it could wait until tomorrow since it was so late. Paul that her that he could not wait, it was important. Ms. Wills asked him if he could walk and talk at the same time, because she needed to get home to her children. As Paul looked around, he told her that would be fine. Miya’s mom caught Paul looking around, and asked if he was ok. Paul told her that he was fine and wanted to know why she sounded scared. She reminded him that she was thinking about her children. When they reached her car, Paul looked around again. When he saw no one around, he pulled a gun on her and told her to get in. Ms. Wills panicked, telling him that he didn’t have to do this. Paul told her to shut up and explained that if she screamed he would kill her, if she ran he would kill her and if she fought he would kill her.

Her grandmother continued on with the story, telling Miya that Paul told her mother if she spoke another word he would shoot her in the mouth. He then told her to get in the car, still looking around to make sure no one was looking. Ms. Wills climbed into the car, afraid for her life. Paul drove her to a wooded area, a place she wasn’t familiar with.

When he finally pulled up to a log cabin, he jumped out of the car, telling her that if she tried to run he would shoot her. Mrs. Wills looked around the darkened woods and knew she wouldn’t try to make a run for it because she didn’t know what was in there. After a couple of minutes, Paul came back, out of breath. He told Mrs. Wills to get out. That's when she started to beg and plead for him to let her go. Paul told her to shut the hell up and quit begging because she’s not going anywhere. Ms. Wills began to cry. Paul told her not to cry and that he loved her, but she told him that what he was doing wasn’t right. Paul then told her to shut up again, he doesn’t want to hear it, that’s how they ended up there. Paul then began talking nonsense, trying to let her know that he loved her and could never hurt her. He asked her if she understood. At that time Miya’s grandmother took a deep breath, and then went on with the story, telling Miya that her mother just looked at him, speechless, but never made a move to get out of the car. Paul then told her to get out the car, explaining that he would not tell her again. At that she didn’t know what that young boy was thinking, so she just got out the car with her mind only on praying she would make it back home to see her kids again. As she proceeded to get out the car, Paul smiled, telling her to look at all he had done for her. Ms. Wills looked at him frantically. She didn’t know what Paul was going to do to her in that house. He had candles lit all around the room. The table was set with food and dessert. He then told her to look around, look at the surprise he had for her. She begged him to stop and to please let her go, but Paul just knocked her to the floor. He told her to look around at all he had done for her. She asked him at that moment if he was going to kill her. Paul told her he could never kill her, he loved her. He just wanted her to see how much, and then he smiled. He opened his arms wide and asked her to look around and know that he did this for her. He looked at her lying on the floor and told her that she needed to get up and go in the room to change into the clothes he had laid out. He explained that brought her something to wear, something so that she wouldn’t look like a teacher that didn’t want the young student. Something to make her look young with him. She yelled at Paul, telling him no, but Paul just walked over to where she was lying and told her that he would not tell her again. Ms. Wills looked up at him, looking him in the eyes, and again told him that she was not going to do it. Paul began to beat her in the head with the gun as he yelled at her, telling her that he didn’t understand why she was making it so damned hard when all he wanted her to do is change her clothes. Ms. Wills then fell back to the floor with blood streaming down her face. At that point, Miya was in tears, and her grandmother decided that she couldn’t continue with the story.

Her grandmother explained to the young child that she couldn’t continue right now. She couldn’t imagine what her child was going through and she was thinking about all that monster had done to her. Miya asked her to continue, stating she needed to know this part of her life as it is something she was going to be living with. Her grandma took another deep breath and asked her if she was sure she really wanted to know what happened because it doesn’t get any better. She nodded, so Mrs. Kelly closed her eyes and went on with the story, she told Miya after her mother was hit so many times, she passed out. When she awoke, she discovered that Paul had cleaned her off and changed her clothes. He had also her tied to the bed. When she saw him sitting in a chair, she asked him what his plans were for her. He studied her for a moment and told her that since she had ruined dinner, they wouldn’t be eating, then he walked away. She looked around to see where he went, trying to come up with an escape plan. All of a sudden, she heard music. The next thing she knew, Paul came in the room dancing and singing to her, telling her that this was all for her. Then he began to strip. At this point, she told Miya that her mom closed her eyes and began to pray. Paul told her to open her eyes and look to see what Daddy got for her. Ms. Wills just kept her eyes closed, praying, asking the Lord what she did to deserve this and to please, please let her see her babies again. Paul asked her if that was how she was going to do it and to go ahead and keep her eyes closed so that she would never forget the feeling of him touching her. Ms. Wills started to cry as he touched her body. Paul raped her for hours. Those hours turned into days.

At this point, Mrs. Kelly broke down. Miya told her that she didn’t have to continue, but her grandmother just told her that she had come too far to stop now. She told her that she needed to get it out and this would be the only time she would talk about it, she needed Miya to understand stand how much her mother loved her and how strong of a woman she had been. Then her grandmother continued with the story as tears tracked down her face. She told Miya she’d know something was wrong when her mother didn’t pick up her brother and sisters, Stardaja, Tiffany and Tee. She explained that her mother loved her children way too much to go without even calling to explain why she wasn’t there. Mrs. Kelly called the police and was informed that in order for her to file a report, her daughter had to be missing for 24 hours. They explained that until that time they couldn’t help her. Miya asked what her what she did next, and her grandmother told her that she got down on her knees and prayed. Then when 24 hours passed, she called the police back. This time they took the report. They found her mother three days later, by the grace of God.

A young man by the name of Kevin had seen Paul talking to her mother when she was leaving the campus that night. The police went by to talk to Paul at his parent’s house and his parents told the police that they hadn’t really seen him for a couple of weeks. They informed the police that he just came in one day, took a couple of things and left. He told them he would be at the cabin for a while. The officer asked if he had someone with him, or if he had been acting different lately. His parents told the officer that they hadn’t seen anyone else and no, he had not been acting differently lately. After the officer wrote down the address to the cabin, they left Paul’s parents’ house and went to the cabin to see if they could question Paul about Ms. Wills.

When Paul saw the police pulling up to the cabin he began to freak out, not knowing the police didn’t know he had Miya’s mom. Paul started to panic. He started yelling out the door, telling them if they didn’t get off his property he would kill her. At that point, the officers called for backup, Paul actions had given him away. Paul walked away from the door, into the room where her mom was and told her this was the end. She begged him not to take her away from her kids. Paul told her to shut up, asking her if that was the only thing she could think of at a time like this. Then he just went silent. Miya’s mom then tried to speak up since there was silence, but Paul held up one finger, signaling her to be quiet. Paul then walked around the room, relighting the candles, telling her that he knew it was going to be their last time together and he wanted it to be special. He then started touching her all over and smelling her body, telling her that he did not want to forget the scent of her. He proceeded to rape her one last time. Miya’s grandmother told Miya her mother said she felt sick to her stomach as he touched her body. When it was over, he let her go and she tried to run for the door. She was then told that Paul grabbed her mother’s arm asking her why she was trying to leave him like he meant nothing to her. Her mom then told Paul that it wasn’t like that, she wasn’t trying to leave him. Then that’s when Paul heard his parents’ voice. He began to freak out, yelling at them, wanting to know why they were there. He wanted to know why the police called his parents, so he walked out the door with the gun, in his hand, waving it around and yelling at the police, asking why they called his parents. The police yelled at him to put the gun down. Miya’s mother then tried to make a run for it, but Paul grabbed her. He pulled her in front of him so that the police wouldn’t shoot. Paul’s mother, Mrs. Von, cried out to her son asking him to let her go. Paul started to cry, saying that they didn’t understand how it felt to love someone who didn’t love them back. He went on to say that no one knows how it feels to not eat, sleep or be able to concentrate on anything but the person they loved. Paul’s mother told him that she understood how he felt, but Paul told her to shut up because she was a liar and she really didn’t know how it feels because she has his father. He told her that he only had going for him was going to class to see the woman he loves. He gave her one last kiss and let her go As she was running from him, He yelled, out wanting everyone to look at how the woman he loves is running away from him like he is some messed up little boy that does not know what love really is. As soon as he finished his statement, the gun went off. Miya’s grandmother told her that at that point, her mother dropped to the ground, feeling all over her body to make sure she wasn’t shot. Paul’s mother ran past her, screaming over and over again, because Paul had shot himself in the head. Paul’s father just stood there in shock, he couldn't move or speak as his wife held their son in her arms. Paul was pronounced dead at the scene.

When Miya’s mother finally came home, she was never the same. She didn’t go back to teaching and she sued the college because the campus guard was in a car sleeping instead of doing his job. As the case went on, she found out she was pregnant. When the college found out, they wanted to settle the case quickly, because they knew it would look bad. Ms. Wills was ready to settle, she just wanted it all over. When her lawyer found out she was pregnant, he told her not to settle. He told her that he understood she wanted it over, but with everything she went through she deserved more, just let him do his job. When she was further along in her pregnancy, she started getting sick. The doctors didn’t know what was wrong with. She took every test in the beginning of her pregnancy and there wasn’t any sign of anything. They decide to retest her, this time her tests came back showing she was HIV positive. She was eight months pregnant now and blown away by the news. Miya’s grandmother told her that she was going to end her story on this note, telling her that her mother was a strong woman. Miya knew that she was the baby her grandmother was talking about her mother being pregnant with and asked why her mother kept her. Her grandmother told her that Miya’s mother never said, and only God would know.

While still pregnant, Miya’s mother had a nervous breakdown and attempted suicide. She was placed in a mental hospital and while there, gave birth. When Miya was born her grandparents were the only ones that would take her, knowing the fact that she born HIV Positive. Her grandparents tried to keep her and her siblings together until her mother came home. She was in the hospital until Miya’s second birthday, and when she came home she looked so lost and out of it, like her soul had left her body. She started counseling right after she got out, but it just didn’t seem like it was working. Miya didn’t remember that much about her mother from the time she came home until the time she turned five years old.

Miya was heading into Kindergarten now and she was scared. Her grandmother told her, You don’t have to be afraid. This is your school and there will be kids your age to play with. You might even meet a friend or two. After her grandmother dropped her off, she started to get a queasy feeling in her stomach. The kids were looking at her funny, and then the teacher yelled at her to sit down. Miya dropped to the floor in fear. Her teacher told her, Don’t sit on the floor, sit at one of the desks. After everyone settled down, the teacher took them out to play. While they were playing outside on the playground, one of the little girls kept yelling out, Don’t play with Miya! Miya kept playing with the kids anyway, not paying any attention to that girl. This time the little girl said, Whoever plays with Miya is going to get AIDS! Y’all need to start calling her ‘AIDS Girl!!’ Everyone began to run away from her at that point, but Miya, not knowing the reason they were running, started to chase the kids like it was a game.

After school was over, her grandmother was there to pick her up. She was so happy, thinking she made many friends with the kids on the playground. She just couldn’t wait for the next day to go back to school. When she got home, she went straight to the kitchen where her grandfather was sitting to do her homework. Her grandfather asked, How was your first day? Miya responded by jumping up and telling him. He told her, That’s good. He then went back to what he had been doing. She nodded her head and she started to do her homework. He smiled, asking her, What did you do in school? She told him, I played. Mr. Kelly asked her, What did you play? As she was concentrating on writing her name she replied, We played ‘Miya has AIDS’ and it was fun. At Miya’s response, her mother spoke for the first time since coming home from the hospital. She told her mother, Get my daughter out of that school now because she won’t be anyone’s joke or game. A five year old child knows nothing about AIDS and they are obviously repeating what their parents were saying and my daughter will not be bullied like that! Miya’s mouth dropped in shock because she’d never heard her mother speak before.

She could tell from the look on her grandparents’ faces that they were just as surprised as she. From that day on, Miya was home schooled. A couple of months after that incident, her mother passed away and all Miya could think about was her mother’s first words to her and the look of pain on her face because of what the kids’ parents were teaching them. After the passing of her mother, Miya’s family was split up. Her grandparents kept only her oldest sister Tiffany and herself. When they first decided to split them up, they knew that Tiffany was a big part of Miya’s life and had her spoiled. Tiffany chose to stay to help take care of Miya with her grandparents. Stardaja and Tee decided that they wanted to leave so they went with other family members. The only time Miya got to see her other siblings was during the holidays, and it wasn’t for very long because she was forced to stay in her room.

As she got older, she wanted to know why every time someone came over, like family members, she had to go to her room. Tiffany and her grandfather would lie and tell her because the people could get her sick. She believed them and from that point on she would run to her room when people came over. When she was ten years old, her Grandma passed away. It was at this time that Miya really found out what the rest of her family thought of her. Her Grandma always protected her, but her Pops couldn’t lie or cover things up. While she was at the funeral, sitting next to her Pops, her Aunt KayKay came up to her and started yelling, saying, You killed my mother. They should’ve never kept you, they should’ve given you to DSS when your mother died! Miya’s sister, Tiffany grabbed her by the arm and pulled her out of there. That was the second time she could remember get that queasy feeling in her stomach, the one that meant something wasn’t right. The following Monday, Tiffany had taken Pops out to pay bills and left Miya home alone because her teacher would be coming for the day’s lesson. When she arrived, she asked her teacher, Mrs. Smith, to tell her about HIV. Mrs. Smith was a little shocked at the topic, but agreed to talk about it. She asked Miya, What do you want to know? She replied, I want to know everything because I don’t want to kill anyone else. Mrs. Smith asked, Miya, who do you think you killed? Miya responded, Well my Aunt Kaykay told me that I killed my grandma and I don’t know what I would do if I killed Tiffany or my Pops. Mrs. Smith told her, Don’t listen to your aunt. There are many ways of catching the HIV virus, but you can’t catch it by living with someone, touching or kissing them. Miya had already started doing her own research on HIV because she knew neither Tiffany nor her grandfather was going to tell her. Mrs. Smith helped her get all the answers she needed, but they knew there was so much more Miya needed to know. Now on holidays when the family came over, Miya got very upset knowing the truth about her condition. She knew it wasn’t her anymore, it was her own family and the way they felt about her because she was sick. The more she sat in the room when they came over, the more she got upset with Tiffany and her Grandfather for allowing this to go on for so long and not doing anything to put an end to it. She felt like they could have stopped it if they wanted to. Two years passed since her grandmother passed away and she was still hiding in her room during the holidays, Miya finally had enough.

It was Thanksgiving Day when she decided it was about time to join her family at the table. She was upstairs with Pops when she got up. He asked, Where are you going? Miya responded, I’m going to the bathroom Pops. He asked, Why can’t you use your own? She told him with a smile on her face, There’s no tissue in mine. I won’t bother anyone and I’ll be back in a couple of minutes. He said, Ok, but please hurry. She snuck down the hall to the kitchen to see what was going on. Everyone was sitting at the table debating on who was going to cut the turkey. She jumped out and said, Here, I’ll cut it! Everyone jumped at the sound of her voice. Tiffany grabbed her, asking, What’re you doing out here? Miya pulled her arm out of her sister’s grasp and asked, Why can’t I eat with y’all? Why do I have to be in my room every holiday while the rest of you are out here? Her Aunt Kaykay, the one with the big mouth and no sense, told her, Go back to your room. You’re sick with AIDS and I don’t want you to kill anyone else. Tiffany looked at her Aunt Kaykay and said, Don’t you dare talk to my sister like that again. She’s done nothing wrong and it’s not her fault she was born with it. Aunt Kaykay told Tiffany, Little girl, you best remember that I’m your elder and you better not talk to me like that again. Tiffany grabbed Miya’s arm again and pulled on it, telling her, Come with me. As they were walking down the hall, they met Pops who’d come looking for Miya. Pops saw she was in tears and asked, What’s wrong with you? She didn’t say a word, she just ran to her room. He turned to Tiffany and asked, What is wrong with your sister? She replied, You already know what’s wrong with Miya, you just don’t do anything about it. She then followed her sister into her room. Tiffany looked at Miya lying face down on the bed crying and said, You’re going to have to learn how to fight or you’ll be crying for the rest of your life. Miya sniffled before replying, I don’t want to fight. Tiffany told her, Leave the physical fighting to me. I’ll teach you how to fight with words, not fists. Do you notice how easy it is for the family to make you cry? Miya still had tears streaming down her face and was hiccupping so she just nodded her head in answer. Tiffany then said, I’m going to teach you how to make them cry or wish they’d never come over with just the words coming out of your mouth. Miya laughed, then told her sister, I don’t know what I’d do without you. Tiffany hugged her and replied, I don’t know what I’d do without my little sis."

As they were talking, they could hear raised voices coming from the kitchen. At one point, they heard their grandfather yelling, telling everyone to get out. At that, Tiffany jumped up to see what was going on out there. Miya followed, but she stood behind the wall, peeking out to see. Kaykay was yelling at her father, I never thought I’d see the day you’d kick your children and grandchildren out of your house. He turned to the kids and asked, Would you sit at the table with Miya and eat? They shook their heads no, afraid to speak because they’d never seen their grandfather acting like this before. Pops told them, If you can’t sit down and eat with your cousin in my house, then you need to get out as well. I never thought I’d see the day my children and grandchildren would act so dumb. These grands of mine would never know anything bad about AIDS if their own parents, my flesh and blood hadn’t fed them some kind of nonsense. He told his son, I don’t treat you any different for being gay, how the hell can you judge someone? Especially your own flesh and blood. Miya hadn’t done anything to deserve this treatment by her own family. She was born with this. Ben, his son, replied, This is different Pops. I don’t have AIDS. Pops told him, Get out of my house before I say something to you that should’ve been said a long time ago." He then helped everyone to the door. Miya ran back to her room when she saw Pops close the front door and head toward the hall that led to her room.

Tiffany was still standing there, laughing, when Pops walked by to go to Miya’s room. When he got in there, she was sitting on the bed looking sad. Pops told her, Come on, it’s time for us to have a proper Thanksgiving meal. He grabbed her hand and led her to the kitchen table where they sat down to a real southern holiday feast. There was smoked turkey, cornbread dressing, giblet gravy, collards with fat back, macaroni and cheese, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole baked with brown sugar and chopped pecans on top, and of course dessert. Pecan and Pumpkin pies with whipped cream. That was Miya’s first real Thanksgiving, and unfortunately the last one with her grandfather.

    3

Pops died three months later. It was a shock to everyone, because he didn’t seem sick. The day of the funeral was a mess, the family wouldn’t let Miya ride with them in the family car. Miya and Tiffany ended up riding with Mrs. Smith, Miya’s teacher. When they got back to the house after the funeral, Aunt Kaykay looked at Miya and in front of everyone, said, You aren’t going to stop until you kill everyone. Now my father’s gone and soon you’ll be as well. Tiffany jumped in, defending her sister and said, You don’t have to do this, I’ll take care of my sister. Aunt Kaykay responded, telling Tiffany, Miya’s going to an all-girls home or wherever they’ll send her sick ass. I just know that I won’t be taking care of her. They won’t let you either. Tiffany grabbed her sister and took her to her room. Miya asked, Tiffany what is going to happen to me? Tiffany answered, Don’t even think about it. When they went to bed that night, Tiffany got in with her. Miya laid her head on her sister’s lap and Tiffany started petting her like she usually did when Miya woke up from a nightmare. She told Miya, Aunt Kaykay isn’t going to keep you. Miya asked, Tiffany, are you going to keep me? She replied, I can’t do that, I’m too young and the people won’t let me. Miya asked, What people are you talking about? Tiffany answered, D.S.S. Miya started to cry, saying, I’m scared, where am I going to go? Tiffany made her sit up on the bed, looked her in the eyes and said, Don’t cry. This’ll only make you stronger because the world is an ugly place. You need to remember that people do and did love you, like mom, our grandparents and even me. Miya told her sister, I’ll die without you. She responded, You’ll be alright, you’re stronger than you think. This is the time for you to learn to love herself. If you can’t love herself first, how could you love someone else or expect that person to love you. Miya just cried, shaking her head. Tiffany told her, Stop it, no more tears. Miya tried, but she still was crying. Tiffany had tears running down her face too, but it was too dark for Miya to see.

After Tiffany finished talking to her, she told her to get some sleep and never forget that she loved her. Miya told Tiffany that she couldn’t sleep if she tried. Tiffany went in the shower and cried for what seemed like hours because she knew there wasn’t anything that she could do at this time to protect her little sister. She prayed to God and told Him that she knew the Bible said to never question Him, but when will the pain be over for her little sister because she has already suffered enough. When the water began to turn cold she got out the shower, and went to bed.

The next morning Tiffany woke up the sound of her little sister screaming. Their Uncle Ben had her in his arms, carrying her out the house with their Aunt Kaykay right behind him, smiling. Miya cried out, begging Tiffany to help her. Tiffany responded my yelling at her uncle to let her talk to Miya for the last time. Ben put Miya down and she ran to Tiffany. As they were hugging, Tiffany told her not to forget what she said last night. When they let go of each other, Tiffany yelled to Miya, telling her that it was only going to be for one year, just one year. Miya asked Tiffany to promise and she did, smiling, telling her it would only be one year. Their Uncle Ben grabbed her again, putting her in the car this time. Tiffany yelled at her aunt and uncle, cursing them to Hell as she ran into the house crying. Kaykay laughed, telling Tiffany that Miya would go first. She then got in the car to drop Miya off at the D.S.S. office.

When Tiffany went inside, she ran straight to her room, and dropped to her knees praying to God, asking Him to please show her the way. To find a way for her to help her little sister. She knew that Miya would have a horrible time of it no matter where she was placed. Miya was devastated. She went from having everything she wanted, to sharing a room with several girls at the group home she was placed in. She realized that her whole life changed in the blink of an eye and that she needed to deal with it. She looked around and thought that she would need to be here for just one year, until Tiffany turned eighteen and could take her away from the home. She knew she had be strong like Tiff said and wait for the time to pass. The counselor told Miya that she needed to get used to her new home. She had to be up by 5:00 am, breakfast was from 5:30 am to 6:00 am. They had to be out the house by 6:30 am for school. When they got home, they ate and did their homework. On the weekends and when there was no school, they had to clean up. They couldn’t lie around and do nothing. The counselor explained that this was her new life now, so she needed to get used to it. Miya just put her head down. The counselor walked away, telling her that she would get used to it, everyone had the same look on their face when they got there.

She got to the group home on a Monday night, but they did not get her registered for school until Wednesday. When she got there, she was forced to be in another nightmare. The school didn’t know what grade to put her in since she was home schooled. Instead of testing her, the school went ahead and placed her in the Ninth Grade since because of her age.

Miya’s teachers were getting upset with her because she would consistently have her work done before other students’ and then spend the rest of the time sitting there looking around. Her teachers didn’t understand why she was getting it done so quickly. One day her Math teacher, Mrs. Bell, asked her about it. She explained that she had been homeschooled.
