The emergence of a psychopathic killer is bad enough, but when that killer is an immortal Wolf the danger is tenfold.
Can Cameron do what he’d vowed never to do? Can he take on the role as Alpha and neutralize the threat? Or will he run, as far and as fast as he can?

Chapter 1 ~

Cam stood, stretching his aching muscles, his eyes still locked on Chastity lying prone before him. The drip inserted in her arm reminding him how long she’d been in this state. Unconscious and unresponsive with the tube now giving her sustenance to keep her alive.

How long has it been? he thought as he sat back down. Taking up his position at the side of her bed, the place he’d been since just after his uncle’s funeral. Cam couldn’t quite remember how many days he’d sat here, whispering into her ear and urging her to return from wherever she was.

More than once he’d sensed her, just a passing glimpse that she’d heard him. Her eyelids fluttering for the briefest moment before, once again, closing firmly. When that happened desolation ran through his entire being as he prayed again and again to the Goddess for his white Wolf to awaken.

Jinx, Jacob, and Rebecca, tried time and again to get him to leave the bedroom but all they got from him was a growl, snarl, or a Fuck off! with a glimpse of his fangs showing for good measure.

His brain telling him he had to leave, had to take on his role as Alpha, even if he didn’t want to. However, every time he tried he just couldn’t do it. Panic and fear setting in that she’d die when he was gone. These weren’t emotions he was comfortable with, not ones he’d experienced before, and that brought new feelings rushing to the surface. The urge to run from them and the white She-Wolf almost overwhelming.

So far he’d resisted but he wasn’t sure how much longer that would last.

His eyes slid closed, falling over into sleep as his mind pondered what to do. Leave or stay?

*****

"Where is he?" Stracey asked as soon as she’d left the jet, Jinx and Jacob waiting on her with worried looks on their faces.

Jacob took her small suitcase from Marcus as Jinx gave her a tiny smile, relief flooding his face. He’s where he’s been for the last two weeks. In that room next to Chastity.

Take me to him. Stracey frowned, her heels click clacking on the tarmac as they walked towards the Camp. This nonsense has to stop and if you two big bad Wolves can’t take care of it then I will.

It’s not that easy! Jinx retorted, his hands flying upwards in exasperation. Every time we try to talk to him he just about attacks us. I don’t think I’ve ever seen his feckin’ fangs as much as I have this past fortnight. He’s angry and upset and a host of other emotions and he won’t listen to us. We’ve tried, Stracey, honest, but he won’t listen to us.

Stracey carried on, I’ll make him listen. Turning to look at Jinx she stated, He’s got several meetings that he needs to take care of. Ones that are important and I don’t say that lightly. They need his presence, not me on a video call trying to explain his complete absence.

I know, Jinx nodded. I’ve told him that but he just snarls at me and then usually throws something at my head. I tell ya, Stracey, I’ve learned to duck real fast recently.

Stracey laughed, Really? Well, he better not start any of that nonsense with me or there’ll be hell to pay!

Jinx glowered, Yeah, a book, a trash bin, his boot, jeez, and even the lamp one time.

I’ll give him a damn hard slap if he tries that with me. Stracey’s pace quickened as they neared the Camp.

I don’t doubt you would, Jacob piped up from behind.

Turning to look over her shoulder she saw him grinning. Wolves! You can’t just be asses like ordinary men, no, you’ve gotta go all wild and dominant. Well, Mr. P.I., it doesn’t wash with me, not for a second.

Jacob bowed his head. Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you, Ms. Hood.

Stracey raised an eyebrow at him before turning back around, her voice tight as she replied, "I’ve told you not to call me that."

Sorry, Jacob muttered but she was certain he didn’t mean it at all.

Jinx pointed to a large cabin, This is the Alpha cabin, he’s...

She interrupted him, sarcasm dripping from her words, "Ah yes, the Alpha’s cabin. Tell me, Jinx, just how the hell did you get him to agree to be Alpha? That’s something I’m still not clear on. Please, enlighten me."

Jinx squirmed under her scrutiny, a slight blush creeping up his face. He had to. Takeover that is. There wasn’t anyone else that could do it, so he had to.

Really? Stracey stopped at the bottom of the stairs leading to the cabin. You’re telling me there wasn’t one other Wolf around that could take on being Alpha? What ‘bout you? she stabbed a finger at Jinx, turned and pointed to Jacob. Or you, big guy? Neither of you could do this?

Jacob shrugged. Hey, I’m just a P.I. I’m not Alpha material.

Hmmf. Stracey turned back to Jinx, a hand on her hip and tapping a foot impatiently.

Me? Jinx pointed to himself. No way, I’m definitely not an Alpha. Beta, yes, Alpha, no.

I can’t believe Cam agreed to this. He’s said a million times he would never be Alpha and here he is a damn Alpha. She stomped up two stairs, then whirled around. "Not only that but in a Pack that’s in the back of beyond. Do we even get internet access here?"

Jinx lowered his head and she was sure she’d seen a smirk on his face. Well? she prodded.

Yes, we have internet access and we have electricity too. Isn’t that wonderful?

Stracey gave him her evil eye and her sternest voice. Don’t you use that tone with me, Ewan! Sarcasm doesn’t suit you.

She didn’t wait on a reply, storming up the remaining steps and pushing open the door. She was walking so fast that she almost fell into the lap of a man in a wheelchair. His strong arms caught her as she regained her footing.

Oh, I’m so sorry, she apologized, her face turning red as he looked up at her.

No problem. You must be Ms. Hood, I’m Fergie.

He held out a hand and she shook it. Stracey, call me Stracey, and it’s nice to meet you.

Fergie cocked his head to the side staring at her for a moment before looking back at Jinx and Jacob, then back at her. So you’re the one that’s going to sort out the Alpha?

His tone was a little doubtful as he looked at her again. Stracey straightened her back, glaring down at him. I am. Why would you think I couldn’t?

She used her sternest tone as she raised an eyebrow, tapping one of her feet on the wooden floor. Fergie moved his wheelchair back a little, Sorry, Ms…Stracey. Didn’t mean to offend you.

You didn’t. I would need to value your opinion to be offended, and I don’t. I don’t know you and you don’t know me. Stracey turned her head, spearing Jinx with a cold look. Where is he?

Fergie’s eyes widened for a moment before he started to laugh. I see what you mean, Jinx!

Stracey’s head spun around. What did Jinx tell you, exactly?

Jinx growled, cutting off Fergie quickly. I just said you could sort Cam out. That’s all.

Fergie turned his wheelchair around, heading back into the cabin, throwing over his shoulder. "Nah, what you said was ‘Ms. Hood will sort him out. She’s one scary mother.’ Except you didn’t just use mother, but you get the idea, Stracey."

Jinx’s face turned scarlet as he scowled at Fergie’s back. I didn’t quite say that, but we need to do something about Cam. It’s been almost two weeks and there’s stuff he needs to deal with.

Stracey shook her head. I don’t care what you said, Jinx. What I do care about is this sorry state of affairs with Cam. I need him too. There’s business he needs to take care of and that’s what I’m here to do. Get his ass back in gear and his mind out of that room. So, Jinx, take me to him.

Jinx started up the stairs and she followed, ordering Jacob as she went, You, big guy, get my luggage into a suitable room and hang around in case we need you later.

Yes, Ma’am! he exclaimed as she carried on behind Jinx.

He turned left, going down the hallway and stopping at a closed door. Jinx knocked on it and they all heard Cameron’s reply, Go away!

Stracey heard the tone and now understood why nobody had gotten through to Cam so far. Alpha in the extreme and these darn Wolves would obey their Alpha, no matter what. Well, she was no Wolf and he wasn’t her Alpha, so she pushed the door open and stormed inside.

Cameron Sinclair! Just what the hell do you think you’re doing? she saw his head jerk around at her voice, his eyes squinting as his mouth opened to protest her presence. "Don’t you dare! You hear me? Don’t dare try and tell me to leave because it is not happening."

Cam’s eyes locked with hers and she saw him trying to decide how to deal with her. She didn’t give him even a second to think, carrying on in a business-like tone, "You will go and shower, shave, and dress. Then you will meet me downstairs where you have an online video conference with Mr. Akiyama regarding the property deal in Japan. He’s fed up with my ‘Mr. Sinclair isn’t available’ crap and you will talk to him. I’ll see you downstairs and I’ll set up the laptop while I wait on you."

Stracey didn’t wait on a reply, leaving the room quickly and heading back downstairs. The shock on Jinx’s face as she passed him was comical, his eyes darting between her and the doorway she’d just exited. She put a finger under his chin. Close your mouth, you’ll catch flies otherwise.

She heard him chuckle as he followed her, stopping at the stairs and looking back down the hallway. They both saw Cam leave the room and go into the one next to it. Jinx cursed as they carried on down the stairs. Thank fuck for that. I thought he was never going to leave that room.

Stracey patted his arm. You should’ve called me sooner. Jinx nodded. I have to say I was more than a little shocked at his appearance. Cam was never one to not be ‘spick and span’ so to speak.

Jinx led them towards a large kitchen. I know, but he’s hardly left the room at all, not even to eat.

Well, he’s left now and I’ll do my best to try and sort him out for you. Jinx gave her a small smile, worry still in his eyes. "Don’t worry, we’ll get him through this, whatever this is. Now, I would kill for a coffee and something to eat."

Jinx showed her to the table, two women and Fergie already there. This is Marie, Cam’s aunt, you’ve already met Fergie and this is his mate, Angel.

She smiled as she sat down, pulling her laptop out and setting up beside her. Hi, nice to meet you finally. I’ve heard a lot about you from Cam.

Angel smiled back. Glad you could come and I really hope you can get him out of that room.

Jinx grinned. She’s done that already, he’s getting showered and changed.

Marie placed coffee in front of her. The milk and sugar is there and I’ve just made some fresh pancakes if you’d like some.

Fergie looked incredulous as he looked between her and Jinx. She got him out of the room? Like, properly, he’s not just standing growling at the door?

I’d love some thanks, Stracey replied to Marie as Jinx chuckled, nodding his head and grabbing some coffee for himself.

You use some magic or something on him? Fergie asked pointedly, his eyes looking her over.

No. Stracey gave him her best smile. I used my charm.

Jinx almost spat out his coffee, choking and spluttering before wiping his mouth with a napkin. She turned to glare at him, an eyebrow raised and her red lacquered nails tapping on the table. His face burned red as he spluttered. Sorry he muttered as Marie placed a plate of pancakes in front of her.

She lifted her fork toward her mouth. Lucky for you I’m hungry! Thank you, Marie, these look absolutely delicious.

As she tucked into her food Cam appeared, showered, shaved, and dressed in black pants and white dress shirt, open at the collar. He looked almost his usual self, well, apart from the haunted look she saw in his eyes.

There was utter silence as Cam poured himself coffee, turning to lean against the worktop. So, we have work to do? he asked, his eyes only on her.

Yes, she said and pointed to her laptop, the meeting with Mr. Akiyama is scheduled, you’ve got ‘bout half an hour so you can catch up with anything these two pups want to speak to you about.

Fergie frowned at her as Jinx shook his head. Tough. If they thought they intimidated her they were sadly mistaken. She smiled sweetly before going back to enjoy her pancakes.

Cam smirked, Okay, what do you need from me?

Stracey smiled up at Angel who was looking between Cam and her and back again. As if she couldn’t believe that she’d managed to get the Alpha out of the bedroom he’d been locked inside for almost two weeks. Stracey gave the young woman a smile and a wink as she finished her food.

Chapter 2 ~

Cam looked at Jinx then his cousin, both seeming more than a little reticent to talk. You’ve been wanting my attention for days, so talk. What’s going on that I need to know about or deal with?

Jinx coughed. Okay, well, Dupont’s Pack will need some attention. Mac and Logan are there looking after things for the time being but they report there is a real lack of young, strong Wolves. Male Wolves. There’s plenty of women but not enough males and there’s also elders who they’re working with to set up an Elder Council to help with running things. Obviously, it’ll need a proper Alpha too but things appear to be okay for the time being.

Cam nodded. I wonder if my father would send some over. Oh, wait, it’s Grant that’s in charge now so I’ll call him and ask. Plus, there’s my uncle’s Pack in Scotland too, we can see if he’d be willing to send us some of his young Wolves. If Mac and Logan are okay with keeping an eye on the Pack for the time being then we’ll leave them there.

Fergie snorted. Yeah, they’ll like that. I know Mac has a little ‘friend’ and Logan is walking about like a love-struck puppy.

Really? Cam queried, not quite believing the rather quiet and sensible Logan would ever be a love-struck anything.

Jinx agreed with Fergie. Yup, afraid so. I’m pretty certain Mac’s is only a bit of fun but Logan is strung tighter than a drum. The problem is the females, especially the young pretty ones, weren’t treated well under Dupont. I don’t have specifics, but reading between the lines, they’ve been abused for a long time. So, the She-Wolf that Logan has gone all google-eyed over is skittish and she’s keeping him at arms-length. I think he’s gonna go nuts soon, Cam. I’ve never seen him like this before.

Cam looked thoughtful as he pondered the quieter twin being wound tight. He realized he better go and see both of his Wolves soon, let them know he was there in case they needed to talk. As soon as that thought entered his head he was overcome by shame. He’d been selfish and had let everyone down by locking himself away with Chastity.

He took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. Okay, I’m only going to say this once, but I’m sorry for not carrying out my duties. He held up a hand as Jinx opened his mouth. Don’t interrupt, it’s the truth but what’s done is done, from now on I’ll try to do better.

Cam sipped his coffee, a thought jumping into his head. Rory?

Fergie chuckled. "Oh, Rory is gone, totally and utterly gone! He and Charlie are superglued at the hip and you don’t see one without the other nowadays."

Jinx raised his hands. What can I say, he’s in love and so is Charlie. I know they want to mate and her father is happy with the pairing. However, Rory refuses to do so until he’s asked for, and gotten, your approval. His loyalty to Grant’s Pack is causing him some sleepless nights.

Cam asked, How so?

Well, Jinx carried on, Rory wants to stay here, but he’s not sure if he’s expected to return to Scotland or not.

Ahh, I see. Cam moved to sit next to Stracey who was typing furiously on her laptop. "I’m under the impression
