The lady tried to move, but she was immobilized by a rope tied to her chair. Her vision was also obscured by a blindfold. She felt excruciating pain on her head, and she wanted to reach up and touch it, but she couldn’t do so because her hands were tied. She tried to search through her memory to figure out what had gotten her into this predicament, but she didn’t know what had happened, where she was and even worse who she was. It was an awful feeling – she assumed that it might have been the worst experience of her life; however, she had no other memories to rely on.
“Somebody, help me!” She called out. “Why are you doing this to me?” When no one came, she screamed louder and louder until her throat felt raw.
Epilogue
The wind howled through the trees. Flying Creatures hovered above me and they seemingly were trying to attract my attention. Owl sounds carried across the night air, with many other sounds of the night in the background. I felt so small, so lonely in the forest. Why am I here? I said to myself. I shouted for help, but no one came. I ran with all my might but I did not advance very fast. The fetter around my ankles produced noisy tinkling sound and added to my anxiety. My run was impaired with the fetter. All my efforts were futile, but at least I tried. I occasionally turned my head over my shoulder. I saw a small silhouette leaning against a tree at a distant, or did I imagine it. Then I lost balance, and fell flat to the ground and became unconscious.
Suddenly I woke up with cold sweat and squinted to see the surrounding. The lemongrass scent coming from the diffusers permeated through the room, and I was relieved by the familiarity of the furniture and wall paintings. I touched my ankles and knew instantly I had a bad dream. My sleep had been disturbed and it was pointless to attempt sleeping again. I pulled myself from the bed.
I went to the washroom and bathed, hopefully a good clean would flush away the horrific dream. After putting on my office wear and makeup, I walked down the stairs to the dining hall. I was earlier than my father for breakfast.
The smile of the bacon and egg energised me. I sat down, gulped down a fresh orange juice and attacked the breakfast relentlessly.
Wow, you must be very hungry.
George Hampton said as he walked towards the table and sat beside his daughter.
Yes, Daddy.
said Rachel, giggling.
After a sumptuous breakfast, Rachel stood up and bade farewell to his father.
Have a great day at work,
said George Hampton. Oh remember to bring your document to the meetings which you had prepared till late night.
Yes, Daddy. Thanks for your reminder,
Rachel said smilingly. By the way, how do you know?
Oh ha ha, I notice your room’s light was only turned off at midnight.
said George.
There are quite a handful of documents for today’s meetings.
said Rachel.
How is the acquisition of Mr. William Bell’s company?
asked George. Pardon me for asking work at home.
It is successful. Now I am getting our staff to familiarize with Mr. Bell’s company daily operation.
It must be tough on you. Have confidence. I believe you can do the job.
After a pause, George Hampton continued: I am scheduled to go for medical appointment in the morning.
Take care,
said Rachel. Let me know your health report.
No problem. Take care too, my little girl. I see you later once I am done.
To his daddy’s heart, Rachel Hampton would always be his little girl.
Rachel kissed her father goodbye before she stepped out of the mansion. As usual, her driver Armand Rivera was waiting for her beside the limousine.
Good morning, Miss.
Armand greeted her with a big smile on his face.
Good morning, Armand. How are you? Have you eaten your breakfast?
I am fine, Miss. I have eaten. Thank You.
As Rachel approached the car, Armand professionally opened the backseat door for her. Armand had been their driver for more than a decade and he had become a friend to Mr. Hampton’s family.
Rachel had important meetings lined up at her office. A part of her wished that she could cancel the meetings and go for medical appointment with her father but that was not the way that her father wanted it. He wanted it to be business as usual. And Rachel knew that he loved the business which he’d slogged and built it from scratch. He was a successful enterprise tycoon and owner of a multi-million-dollar business. Rachel liked going to work in his company but she also wondered how many more times she would be able to give him a hug or kiss his cheek before the final goodbye came. George Hampton’s doctor told him that he had six more months to live but no one could be certain if the time he had left on earth would be longer or shorter than this.
The other thing that George Hampton loved more than his business was his daughter – his only child, and his pride and joy. Her mother had passed away several years earlier and since that time it had only been George, Rachel and the business. Soon, when George passed on, it would leave only Rachel and the business, and that worried George. He wanted to see his daughter married off to a good man. One who would love her and support her in everything she did. He would have liked to be around for grandchildren but the most that he could hope for was maybe attending her wedding if she could find the right kind of man to love.
Rachel knew how much her father wanted to see her wed and knowing that weighed very heavily on her heart and mind. Many men wanted to date Rachel, but most of the time it was because of who she was and the financial assets that she possessed – most men she dated didn’t really care to know her inner self, they only want to date and eventually marry the rich Rachel Hampton. Rachel spent a lot of time contemplating whether or not she should agree to marry a man and have a fast wedding so that her father could witness it. She would be willing to do anything for her father but she also believed that marriage was a commitment, one that should last a lifetime and she didn’t know if entering into a marriage with the plan to possibly get an annulment once her father was gone was something that she would attempt to do it.
Vincent was one of the men who dated Rachel a month ago. He exhibited a charisma that held the listeners’ attention and interests. He liked to talk and joke. Rachel was really charmed by his personality. And she believed that she could fulfil her father’s wish at last. However, on an occasion, she overheard Vincent’s conversation with his colleagues. He bragged about his relationship with Rachel and commented that in no time, she would fall head over heels in love with him. Rachel was disgusted with his arrogance and ended the dating.
There was another guy who dated Rachel a year ago. Nelson never failed to send flowers to her office. His cards along with the flowers were filled with love poems for her. She was greatly amazed at his talent and was touched with his poems.
