      Purpose of Guide

      The purpose of this guide is to offer information useful to organizations seeking ideas for raising unrestricted funds. Unrestricted funds can enhance service delivery by allowing organizations to fund activities not usually covered by public or private grants. This publication contains activities and ideas that could be used to raise amounts ranging from a few dollars to several thousand dollars.

      Many of the activities described in this guide require little to no up-front costs. However, you will need a few committed people who believe in your organization’s mission. Board members and other volunteers may choose to implement activities on behalf of the organization.

      This guide is provided with the understanding that it is not for the purpose of rendering legal, accounting, or other professional services.       INTRODUCTION

      If you work for a non-profit or government agency whose survival depends on grants, you have probably experienced not having enough funds for items covered by grants. Some grants don’t cover expenses such as equipment, travel, staff development, and refreshments for meetings. Most grants are awarded for specific projects with specific goals and objectives. However, unrestricted funds are those that are not set aside for a specific use. The direct service provider (agency) and the board of directors determine the best use of such funds.
