What others are saying:

This is a very interesting book and I enjoyed every minute of it. The characters are deep and bordering dark. The plot thickens with every page I turn and the ending was totally unexpected. I highly recommend this to readers who want books that hold them at the edge of their seats because this one is definitely an exciting ride. I must warn though that this book is not something I would recommend to minors or those below 18 years old as there are some content that I feel may not fit younger readers. Overall, I really loved this book and I look forward to reading it again in the future.

    Chapter One: Hope

Normalene Johnson grew up in a small truck stop town off Highway 1 with the incongruous name of Hope. Situated between the Coast Mountain Range and the Cascade Mountains, Hope was the hub of southern British Columbia highways, making it a great destination for forlorn truckers to get a good meal and much needed rest. The neon lights illuminated the Truck Stop and it was a welcome sight to the tired eyes of the highway traveler. Whether a sole weary rig driver, or a family of five in their Pontiac station wagon who were tired of hearing Are we there yet? Big Bob’s In and Out had it all for every type of traveler: large spots for the trucks with sleepers to park, and a motel for the traveler with nowhere to hang their hat or to lay their head. The rooms weren’t fancy, but they were clean and the truck stop was not a destination. There was the 24 hour diner where you could find something to fill your belly day or night, and of course diesel to fill the belly of your rig and a free breakfast inside the diner if you did. Jack Cole had owned the truck stop since his parents had passed it down to him more years ago than he could remember.

Normalene sat in the corner booth lost in thought, wondering what there was beyond Hope. She had led a very sheltered life growing up in a home full of addiction. There were no trips to Disneyland for the Johnsons or camping trips to nearby provincial parks. The Johnson home was survival of the fittest and avoidance was the key to survival. Normalene had learned from a very young age to fade into the woodwork and could seemingly disappear from the sight of her feuding parents. Normalene was what her parents readily told her was an accident and had been born ten years after her two siblings who had moved out of the unbearable home as soon as they could manage.

Normalene was jolted back to reality by a loud booming voice coming from the kitchen. NORMA! Get your head out of the clouds girl! bellowed Jack, the owner and cook of the diner. Normalene stubbed out what was left of her cigarette into the overflowing ashtray and, jumping up quickly, smoothed out her uniform, an unappealing short dress the color of washed-out mustard, and a small white apron with a frilly fringe now gone grey from age. She grabbed the coffee, which was more like black tar and filled the cups of the local regular customers and the transient truckers. Normalene, when you ever gonna get out of this one-horse town? asked Joe, one of her regular customers who asked her this same question every time he came in. When you sweep me off my feet, Joe, and marry me and take me far away from all this she said with a laugh. Well, if I wasn’t already spoken to you know I would, he said, chuckling. Jack’s head popped through the opening that separated the diners from the kitchen as he rang the bell for an order up. Stop harassing the staff, you old fart! he chimed in.

Normalene was grateful to have her job at the diner as there weren’t a whole lot of options for a young girl like herself in this small town. She enjoyed the playful banter and the light atmosphere of the diner and even though Jack came across like a gruff old man he was soft at heart and his bark was worse than his bite. Jack’s wife had passed away several years ago from cancer, and he loved the companionship he had with Normalene and his customers, though he loved to joke and come across as though they were all a
