Island of the Sorcerer
Kormak stood on the prow of the longship, scanning the sea ahead. Gulls cawed as they rode the wind above the waves. Something else, gull-sized but bat-winged and alien, swirled overhead chasing the sea birds.
The ocean looked vast and threatening in the pre-dawn light. The icy wind tugged at his cloak. He rubbed his hands together to drive away the chill. Behind him, the giant oarsmen strained to drive the ship through the cold northern waters. They made Kormak feel useless. He was not strong enough to pull an oar with the giants. It would be like asking a toddler to row alongside grown men.
Lars strode forward. The blonde-bearded Northlander was twice as tall as Kormak and far bulkier, but he strode the clinker-built deck lightly. A white cloak made from the pelt of a polar bear he had killed single-handed hung from his vast shoulders. A winged helmet covered his brow. Kormak could have used the knife in his belt as a sword.
There,
Lars said, pointing a dagger-sized finger into the distance. A greenish-red light blazed on the horizon, like a demonic sun dawning over the sullen sea.
Looks like fire,
Kormak said. He knew it wasn’t, but the giant expected him to say something.
Fire on the sea,
Lars said. When I passed this way last there was nothing out there but herring. Now, the sea blazes.
Maybe the fish have learned to cook themselves,
Kormak said. Lars roared with laughter and slapped him on the back with one massive hand. It was like being hit with a bludgeon. Lars became serious again.
I don’t think so,
he said. The crew stared at their chief from their places at the oars. Their chant never faltered. Look at the water.
Kormak noticed the discoloured waves swirling around them. Reddish-green silty tendrils stroked the longboat’s sides.
You’ve seen the like of this before.
Lars grimaced and then shrugged. I’ve seen islands born of fire and storm in the cold ocean waters, but I’ve not seen this. It could be a sign we are getting close to what we are looking for?
That would be good,
said Kormak. I am tired of this wind and looking at nothing but ocean.
I can tell you are no Northlander,
said Lars. None of us would ever say that—even if we thought it.
I’m from Aquilea. It is made of mountains and surrounded by land on every border. I liked it that way.
You may be seeing a mountain soon,
said Lars. But it will be surrounded by sea on all sides.
I’ll take whatever I can get.
You might not be saying that after we go ashore.
If we can find your brother and his crew, I’ll be happy.
Olaf’s ship had turned off from the rest of the raiding fleet to investigate a mysterious light. The rest of the reavers had returned to Hjallam’s Fjord, bringing the news. Olaf had not been sighted since.
"Aye, well that will be
