Description

The concept of luck has mystified and confounded individuals and organizations for far too long. Bye Bye Black Cat dissects the structure of luck and provides readers an understanding of how to create good luck in their lives, relationship and career.

Set against a road trip across the vast and rugged outback of Australia, this is the story of a pair of twins, Jack and Joe, who realise that with a few adjustments in their way of thinking they are able to turn their luck around and say goodbye to the black cat forever.

This book was written with the objective of helping individuals reach their full potential. It is also designed as a product for a workshop in organizations.

The metaphor of a black cat was chosen as it is deemed to be bad luck in many countries around the world.

Bye Bye Black Cat - Sylvia Fernandes

"I thoroughly enjoyed the read and like many good reads the

sound principles in the book keep coming back

into my thinking.

I recommend this as a must read for anyone who wants

more out of their life. I found the concepts clear and simple,

nothing complex or tricky just powerful. My advice

would be to read it, digest it, give it a go and

positive change will happen."

FOREWORD

In the year 2008 I engaged Sylvia to assist in developing my people as the company strategy was to grow aggressively. I was then CEO of a JV life insurance company based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

I had a keen interest in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Sylvia, being an NLP Trainer who specialised in corporate applications, was the right match for us.

While growth initiatives started on the business front, Sylvia worked with all levels of my people. I felt that unless we were all able to speak a common language our success would be limited.

Sylvia had more days with senior and middle management to help steer their mindset towards preparation for growth. At the same time she worked with junior levels to motivate them towards higher levels of engagement.

Preparing the minds of our people towards a big shift in revenue and targets was central to the success of our business strategy. We felt that Sylvia did a great job in moving our people with tools and skills to adapt to the new culture.

By the end of all programs the company was flying. People were motivated and profitability was rising. The company became a takeover target and was sold to a multinational company.

On looking back I know that business and human resource strategies have to be aligned and merged if companies are to be successful. We made the right moves at the right time.

We continue to work with Sylvia today and know that she is a person who produces quality work that is applicable in the workplace. This book is a culmination of her efforts over the last twelve years and is designed to give you, the reader, an opportunity to change your mind for greater success.

I like the idea that it will be taken further into a Bye Bye Black Cat workshop as people need to experience these NLP processes which lead to profound change.

PREFACE

Oh, you’re so lucky! I have heard this remark often said to me. Over the years I realized that I was doing something to create luck in my life.

I then observed and detailed the process for luck as I discovered it was not a one-off event. Understanding this process enabled me to recognise and seize new opportunities in various places and stages of my life. Tony Robbins the great motivational speaker defines luck as opportunity realised.

Good luck goes beyond winning the lottery, getting a double promotion or receiving an honorary title. These are one-off events and quite independent of any genuine effort on anyone’s part. Good LUCK is much, much more than that!

As I forged a new life and career transitioning through many industries from Banking to IT and Human Resources, I deepened my understanding of luck. I now incorporate this into my work and wish to share the LUCK formula in this book.

I recognised early in my soul-searching journey that the invisible and real forces, psychological and spiritual, play an important part in the material realm. The field of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) helped me develop this understanding. NLP gave me a structure, process and methodology to work with others and incorporate these insights in practical ways.

My redefined values, which now drive my daily life, plus the empowering beliefs that complement them, have heightened my optimism and enabled me to recognise luck along the way.

I use this approach in my work with individuals and companies in the Australasian region. Helping people reach their full potential to live a better life has been a privilege. It is the motivating force that propels me to share my knowledge with as many people as possible.

The idea of writing this book emerged from my desire to reach a wider audience than my current client work does. I wanted to explain in a relaxed and accessible way, the ‘formula’ for discovering and developing luck.

Many readers have undertaken or planned a road trip. It is a symbol of our life and learning. It is also allegorical. Such stories have long been used to help readers reflect on their own lives. So I decided to write about a road trip.

The story is set in Australia, which has vast, beautiful and uncluttered landscapes. Common to the world’s many and diverse cultures, is the tradition of ‘going into the wilderness’ to seek wisdom. Whatever name one gives to this wisdom, the realisation that there is a higher plane beyond the material enables us to become more connected to ourselves.

The book is divided into two main parts. The first part is a story about a road trip undertaken by two brothers. The second part is an analysis of the story, using change management methodologies that will give you the opportunity to reflect on and process change.

You may choose to read the book in two ways:

• Chapter 1 of the story then Chapter 1 of the analysis or

• the entire story then the entire analysis

You will also find a Glossary of NLP Presuppositions after the Analysis. This is the fundamental level of beliefs that successful people hold. While they may seem like simple statements they have a powerful and profound effect when applied to the workplace and life in general.

While the story is fiction, it is a reflection of my personal journey. Many elements of my life were fleshed out in the main characters of the book. The book is also a culmination of:

• participants’ experiences at my NLP programs

• client feedback over the years

• NLP content which I have attained through many years of study

• the genius of both NLP co-founders Richard Bandler and John Grinder in coding the field

• the advice, wisdom and knowledge of NLP trainers I have met along the way

The book’s characters and events are vehicles that present insights into the formula for luck. The power of good luck is that it takes on a life of its own long after you have started taking action towards welcoming it into your life. I hope you enjoy it and find your luck to achieve abundance and success in health, relationships, prosperity and spirituality.

CHAPTER 1

WISDOM COMES FROM THE GREATEST FALLS

A Rude Awakening

It took a while for Joe to realise he wasn’t dreaming. The transition from dream fragments to being awake was becoming more sluggish lately. He was vaguely aware of light pressing against the thick curtains. He shifted his head slightly and could see little glimmering speckles on the timber floor.

Sometimes he didn’t open the dusty curtains. In fact, it was probably over a week since he’d done so. He usually shuffled from bed to bathroom and then down the steep, narrow stairs to the living area, where, more often than not, he slouched on the sagging sofa, summoning the energy to make some coffee.

Recently, he’d resumed having black coffee. Not so much from choice as from the fact that there was no fresh milk in the house. He’d stopped buying it when he’d had to throw out the festering remains from a carton he’d forgotten was there. Most mornings, or more often it was early afternoon, Joe found it easier to walk to the corner store a few doors down for the
