I met Sally a few years back through an introduction from a mutual friend. Our mutual friend suspected that we would enjoy the discussion given our similar passion for cyber security, education, empowering boards and directors, and the work that we do. I personally enjoyed the discussion and Sally and I are now collaborators, enthused by making a contribution back to our industry. Sally is passionate, curious, dedicated and a little crazy because she is willing to tackle something far larger than many would even contemplate: how one person can connect with a range of networks to change an industry. This is a great mission, something in which I am convinced Sally will succeed.

This book is one such passion. I remember when Sally first shared with me about many of her discussions with directors, senior executives and even board members who were interested in this thing called cyber security but did not really know where to start. In her own research she found such a large array of confusing and overwhelming information, ranging from deeply technical to deeply wrong.

The idea for this book was pitched perfectly to me when Sally described it saying, I want a board member to buy this book at the airport bookshop and read it cover to cover on a short plane flight. At the end of that flight, they’ll have a deeper understanding of cyber security and be armed with insight and questions for their next discussion. This is a great objective and if the book hits this goal, it will have made a positive and impactful contribution to the industry. I believe it can and will, which is why I am pleased to write this foreword.

I have been lucky enough to look after cyber security at a couple of different organisations. In each case I have loved the interaction with our board and our senior executives. Education is important, but moving from educating to having real conversations is imminently powerful.

In my own experience, board members, directors and senior executives are incredibly intelligent people. Regardless of the size of company, industry they operate in, or challenges that their businesses face, each is there to contribute, help, steer, guide and ultimately ensure the business is successful. Clearly, for large organisations, cyber security’s impact and implications are equally as large. Boards and executives of these organisations have a wealth of resources under them and therefore are able to ask the right questions, to understand the why behind the message and to help steer the ship. However, for smaller organisations without those same resources, cyber security remains just as large a challenge. In some cases the challenge is greater – one incident could completely wipe out the company. Furthermore, cyber security is also an issue that impacts each and every individual person that uses the Internet – from the smallest toddler on an iPad to the grandparent using Skype, Facebook and YouTube to follow the growth and life of that cute little toddler. It is for all these reasons that I am enthusiastic about this book. Anything that can be done to better educate people and better inform decision makers who shape and drive our businesses is a really good thing.

Cyber security can be intimidating. It is too easy to focus on the fear, uncertainty and doubt that this industry loves. The industry is full of jargon and far too much technical speak; a real gift is to be able to break down those barriers and
