About this ebook

Adam and Dan are hunting a psychopath, a once brilliant man, demented by memories of war and the death of his best friend. And utterly bent on teaching society a lesson ... A masked man breaks into women's homes, never speaking and stealing nothing of value, only a document bearing their name. Soon, he leaves behind a sinister note, boasting of plans to commit a great crime; a crime that will shock the country. A police marksman kills two men in separate but frighteningly similar shootings. But is it murder? Another woman is attacked, another document taken, another note left. It claims each contains a code revealing the 'great crime'. And it's growing closer, hour by passing hour. Why does the attacker steal only documents with women's names on? How to solve the riddle contained in the notes? Time is running out. As each riddle is cracked, the man is always one step ahead of the police - until the increasingly desperate search converges on Dartmoor ... Simon Hall is the BBC Crime Correspondent for the Devon and Cornwall area. Evil Valley is the third novel in his TV Detective series, following the highly successful The Death Pictures. Simon is 38 years old and lives with his wife in Plymouth.

A great read from cover to cover that I was engaged in from the outset. I am a crime/thriller reader who likes her gore and nastiness and I expected this to be more mathematical and scientific. Whilst it didn’t have the gore, it wasn’t scientific either – it was clever and intelligent. After reading it, I explored the author’s website to get more biographical information than the book allows, I also discovered this way the titles of Simon Hall’s other two books – which I have this very morning purchased online. As the third in the TV detective series, I thought I might be missing some character information. Whilst there were references made to other cases that Dan Groves (TV Reporter) and Adam Breen (Detective) had worked on, I felt that Hall provided enough information for you to be familiar with them. Failing this, there is always the author’s website to help you. There are stories running parallel within the novel and often this can be confusing for the reader to keep their minds focused on different plots. However, with the link between two characters (Dan and Claire) you are continually reminded of each separate story. Usually I feel that for a thriller, this length novel is sufficient and yet I found I could have read more. It was compelling and engaging to the point where I didn’t want to put it down. I wish in the initial stages I’d been able to devote more time to it because I found when I picked it back up with two-thirds still to read, I devoured it. Overall, it’s a great plot involving psychopaths and codes; with equally great characters. I liked the ending, finding it could either leave the path open for Dan and Adam to reunite again or allowing it to be closure for them. A book (and author) that I would highly recommend.
