About this ebook

The Major and Miner is the thought-provoking story of Mathew, a young miner's son who enlists in WW1 in the final year of the war. We follow him through the horrors of battle and watch as he tries to build a better life for himself with the help of his mentor, Peter Church, his commanding officer in the war. Their adventures are dangerous, funny, and exciting, and ultimately it is a story of their friendship and how they both help each other recover and move on from the horrors of the war.
The book also highlights the hypocrisy of the WWI tactics, and sheds light on the class differences present at the time and how this affected the outcome of the war. We see how Mathew navigates these unforeseen difficulties, from being mistaken for Church's servant to standing up to an army general and proving that his birth cannot limit him when he sets his heart on something.

I am the youngest of four, born under the star sign of Taurus and am older than I want to be but escaping to Spain two years ago, I found a rejuvenated spirit to enjoy life once again. Putting careers of casino and marketing behind me some sixteen years ago, I began writing, but it took a time of apprenticeship to be confident readers might want to see what I have written. My time in gaming allowed me to travel the world to appreciate different cultures, but more satisfying, people paid me to do it. My transition into marketing proved effortless, if you can convince a goat herder to put his life savings on a roulette table, then persuading a company to invest fortunes on advertising campaigns to sell a pot of jam came easy. Married life disappeared as fast as it began and with a few failed relationships behind me, I'm probably not the ideal person to share a life with. I'm single again and thankfully (for them) have no offspring to brag about. My education came to an abrupt stop when expelled from private school in Brighton without an ‘A' level to my name, but this fortunately didn't seem to matter back then. At that age, money and how to get it seemed to be the target, not too dissimilar to today's youngster's aspirations. But I was fortunate to have had parents who permitted me to tread my own ‘Yellow Brick Road', possibly the journey educated me far more than any university could muster. Some call me lucky, but I disagree. There is no such thing as luck. Similar to the lead character in this novel, Mathew Hobbs, you have to take your chances in the game of life to succeed.
