Book six in this series follows the lives of two families descended from settlers who arrived at Cockburn Sound in 1833.
Ambrose Whittiker and his son, Benjamin, continue farming at Chadora. Benjamin’s fiancée Patricia Webb is knocked down by a car which causes her to become blind and she refuses to see Benjamin.
Sister Elizabeth Whittiker, working in the Bunbury Hospital meets Connor Beck. During the floods of 1946, the Preston River washes the bridge away at Picton Junction and Connor, while rescuing people is reported as missing.
Alexander Whittiker marries Evelyn Chadwick, also a member of the USA Air Corp. They marry in New York in 1949 and are transferred to Hawaii, after the Second World War.
Friends of the Whittikers, Connie and Charles Morgan, return to the city from Kalgoorlie, keeping contact with Connie’s nephew, Ronald Murphy, a descendant of the Murphy family who befriended the Whittikers in 1833.
Connie’s and Charles’ life is mayhem when their daughter Winnie announces her wedding plans, and news that a son, Godfrey and his girlfriend are expecting a baby, adds to Connie’s menopause problems and leads to depression.
