CHAPTER ONE
I WANT A DIVORCE. The words hit Tariq like a gut punch from Mike Tyson in his prime. He picked up the crisp white piece of paper and reread the words. I WANT A DIVORCE. He immediately thought it was a joke. He continued reading the letter hoping to hit the punch line, but there wasn’t one. It wasn’t a joke, but a fact. His wife of more than fifteen years wanted a divorce.
He searched his desk for the envelope the letter came in, but he couldn’t find it. His assistant was methodical about how she handled the mail. All letters were opened, sorted, and placed in files according to urgency. Things that demanded his immediate attention were placed in a red folder in the middle of his desk blotter. His assistant always placed that folder there so he would see it when he went to place his laptop onto the desk. Things he could wait to address were placed in a blue folder on the lower right hand corner of his desk. His assistant knew he only read that file twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. And things he needed to be informed about, were in a black folder at the top upper right hand side of his desk. He checked that folder every Friday after lunch.
He asked himself how this letter ended up in the blue folder when it clearly should have been put in his hand the minute it arrived. He read the letter again hoping it was a mistake, or that his eyes were playing a trick on him. A DIVORCE. When did…how did they get to that point? He thought they were fine. Like most couples, they had a few problems, but nothing that would lead to such a drastic decision. A decision he had no say in.
A DIVORCE. No one in his family was divorced. Of his two sisters and brother, Tariq had the most stable marriage, he thought. If he and Cicely could be in this situation, what did that say about his sisters and brother? If anyone seemed destined for divorce, it was his younger brother, Asher. Asher habitually cheated on his wife. Asher looked at his marriage vows as suggestions, not as a commitment or emotionally binding agreement.
While Tariq patiently waited for Jim to set up his presentation, he used the time to catch up on the blue folder mail, and that’s how he discovered the letter. The letter that was about to change the course of his life. He looked at the gentleman sitting in front of him making his presentation, and knew he needed to get rid of him so he could investigate the origin of this letter.
I’m sorry Jim.
He stood up. I like where you’re going with this, but there’s something I need to take care of. Beef up the numbers by thirteen percent and explore the possibility of our acquiring Kinnerson Electronics. I heard they were looking to sell. If we get them, it would reduce our cost on the Phillips contract. We would also be able to retain the existing staff, as well as add an additional forty-five more jobs. Keep up the good work.
Jim stood up. When do you…
Tariq walked around his desk and escorted Jim out of his office. Marisol will call you to schedule a follow up meeting for later in the week. Thanks.
He looked around the smaller office but didn’t see his assistant. He walked back to his desk and reread the letter.
He heard the outer door open and close, followed by tiny footsteps tapping across the grey marble floor, then quiet as they landed on the carpet. He looked up and his petite, brown-skinned, curly haired assistant of more than ten years was walking into his office.
"Why did I just pass Jim Andrews in the hall?
