Book Description
Vaping 101 – History of Vaping takes a brief look at the history of this recent pastime, focusing first on tobacco and its place in various cultures through the past 2000 years. The e-book starts with a survey of tobacco use:
•The plant that produces tobacco leaves
•How smoking methods changed through the years
•When science got involved in the smoking habit
With this basic information, the book moves onto a look at:
•Early versions of the electronic cigarette
•Various options for vaping
•How this became a business
•How it grew as a business
•Improvements to vaping equipment and oils
The last part of the book gives details of:
•How big tobacco gets involved in vaping
•Natural vs. organic
•Where the industry is now and where it is going in the future
•Status of federal legislation regarding vaping

The subject is much too big to cover in a small space, but this e-book is a good place to start if you want to know more about this popular pastime.

    Tobacco - The Plant

Tobacco, or at least the two strains common to what we know as the western hemisphere, has been around for thousands of years. Nicotiana rustica and Nicotiana tabacum were believed to be cultivated for human use in what is now South America, specifically in the area occupied by the modern nations of Peru and Ecuador.

Archaeologists have discovered small tubes they believe were used for snuffing dried tobacco, which may have pre-dated smoking by centuries. Those creative people in the mountain regions of South America also found that tobacco is a natural insecticide, so they may have blown smoke over their crops to keep bugs away. It is also believed that they rubbed oil or juice from tobacco on their skin to keep parasites away.

Smoking was first made possible when cured tobacco leaves were rolled into cigars or when tobacco was wrapped in corn husks or other leaves. As the habit moved northward, into Central America, the Mayan culture began to use tobacco as a central part of their culture. Another of the great cultures of this area, the Aztecs, smoked tobacco for health, for pleasure, and as a community ritual.

Tobacco pipes eventually became a key part of the culture of Native Americans, according to historians. As the centuries passed, European adventurers encountered native populations in the Caribbean islands and found that it was quite common for most of the people to carry a tube made of paper that was wrapped around tobacco leaves. This was quite a surprise to the travelers from the European continent, where it was more common to use dry tobacco as snuff.

The foreign visitors reported the practice as sinful and as having some association with the devil, a description based on their strong religious beliefs. However, this did not stop sailors from carrying the plant back to Europe, where it was planted in gardens and cultivated for future use. As we now understand, this eventually became a
