    The Travels (1298), travel writing

    Marco Polo, a Venetian citizen from a large family of merchants, was born in 1254. Along with his father, Nicolo, and the brother of the latter, Mafeo, he travelled for 23 years throughout the whole of Asia, for primarily commercial reasons: they were to promote exchanges between Europe and the Mongolian Empire, which was a great economic power during the 13th century. He visited countries including Greater Armenia, Persia, India, China and Japan. On his return, he wrote the marvels, meaning the surprising things that he had seen during his travels: when he ended up in prison, during a war between Genoa and Venice, he dictated the story of his travels to one of his cellmates, Rustichello of Pisa, a writer,
