About this ebook

Eathon got out of the car and headed for the sidewalk leading up to the door of the diner. He was going to ask around and see if anyone needed extra help around the ranching community he’d just passed before entering the small town. Surely, someone could use a strong ranch hand.
Chrissie nudged Mellie. “Oh, look what’s walking in. The man’s a dream.”
“You’re right,” Mellie agreed with her. “So sexy with that light shadow across his cheeks.”
Chrissie didn’t waste any time in walking toward the booth where the stranger slid his large frame. She smiled warmly, placing an ice filled glass of water in front of him. “Can I get you anything?” Her twang seemed more pronounced in her excited state. She was silently thinking just what she’d like to get him and it wasn’t food.
“A cup of coffee and the house special,” he murmured, his blue eyes meeting her sherry gaze.
“You aren’t from around here, are you?” Chrissie couldn’t identify his accent.
“New York,” he answered with a smile, showing a set of dimples slicing along each cheek.
“Do you plan to stay in the area?” The words popped out of her mouth before she could stop them. Why in the world was she asking him questions when she didn’t even know the man?
“Actually, I’m looking for work,” he admitted, showing his interest in her by the way his blue eyes did a quick once over of her curvy figure. “Do you know of anyone in the area looking for help?”
This was too perfect. I’m going to offer him the job Earl just walked off of a few days earlier. It didn’t matter to Chrissie that she knew nothing about this stranger. He had an honest face, so she was willing to take a chance on him. Oh was she ever willing to take a chance on him.

    Chapter One

Eathon Anderson finished the last memo of the day and pushed his chair back from the oak desk dominating his office. He’d made up his mind that this was the last day he was going to work in confining setting. His thoughts were that sitting in an office all day wasn’t a very healthy lifestyle.

He pushed some important documents in his briefcase to take home planning to put them in the safe. Eathon glanced around one last time before starting toward the door. As he pulled the door of his office closed, he met his Uncle Benjamin in the hallway. Eathon hid a smile over the way his uncle’s white bushy hair had a life of its own falling carelessly to almost covering his face. The piercing blue eyes narrowed and Eathon knew Benjamin was going to give him an opinion about the decision he’d made on leaving.

Why is it necessary for you to go off gallivanting across the country? What are you searching for that you don’t have here? If you stick around New York for a few more months, we could sort out what’s troubling you and remedy things.

I need the time to get away and clear my head. Eathon glanced at his uncle. I want to find out what it’s like to be an average guy out in the world with very little money. Hell, I can have any woman or any material thing I want in New York. This isn’t any kind of life. Besides, sitting in an office all day isn’t good for anyone’s health.

So, you’re going to head across the country in that old rattle trap car you just bought and pretend you don’t have a dime. It’s going to be hard to pretend you’re a pauper when you’ve had such a comfortable life. He shook his head looking at Eathon as if he thought he’d lost his mind. What will you use for money on your great adventure?

I’ll take a little with me for food and gas to get me started, but I’ll do an honest day’s work wherever I land for the moment. I’m sure there are odd jobs out there and I’m not helpless.

No, you aren’t helpless, his uncle clucked. "You’ve amassed a fortune playing the stock market and could live the life of luxury, but no, you want to become a hobo, wondering where your next meal will come from."

"Oh come on, you’re taking this to extremes. I’ll
