About the Author
Chapter One
Dawn broke, as a lazy fog drifted down the valley. It lay thick and heavy, as slowly the residents of Willow Grove, started to rise and go about their day. The sun was trying to poke her head through the fog as I waved my wand at the door of Number Ten. Number Ten is a charming little café run by Me-Kitty and my mum Garmi. A magical shiver ran through the café, as I entered the lights flicked on and the coffee grinder came to life with a flick of my hand.
I had only taken a couple of steps into the shop when I heard sounds behind me. I did not have to turn around to know who it was.
Morning Kitty!
"Good Morning to you, Emon.
That fog is so thick this morning, I nearly got lost, Kitty!
Where did you get lost?
Umm…well….in my kitchen...
I looked at her.
Emon, how did you get lost in your kitchen?
Like I said, the fog is really thick and I could not see the bench...
Why was your kitchen fogged in?
this was going to be good.
Well…umm…I may have …umm...sort of upset Windi.
Oh Emon, what did you do this time?
She was always upsetting Windi, our resident weather witch.
Oh Kitty, I didn’t do anything…
Emon!
Oh...well she didn’t like my new spell. She just got angry
. I was wrong this was so not going to be good. Windi was also my cook and if she was truly upset we were all in trouble.
Out with it, Emon. What did you do?
I was only trying to help, Windi. I promise…
EMON!!
Damn and blast it was like pulling bloody teeth!
I went over to Windi’s yesterday, so I could show her my new spell I have been working on to clean kitchens. I thought it would be helpful. But…
Yes...But?
Emon looked down at her feet as she fidgeted.
Well, it backfired… I think I know what I did wrong, I used too much asafoetida. So, next time...
EMON!
Sorry, Kitty, well after the smoke had cleared, Windi’s kitchen was covered in this rotten green slime, sludge type stuff. It stunk too. So, I tried a reversal spell, but that just added to the mess…
What do you mean ‘added to the mess’ a reversal should have taken it back to before you cast your spell. It should have worked for…
Emon was looking ever so sheepish.
Out with it, what happened?
Well the reversal spell reacted with the cleaning spell and it …well... it created this even worse smelling acid, which ate Windi’s kitchen all up. All that was left were the metal fixtures and pipes.
Oh, this was bad, Windi loved her kitchen she had hassled me for weeks to make a spell which would make everything a different shade of purple for her.
Oh Emon, so the fog?
She sighed, and wrung her hands.
Windi made me leave, she wouldn’t let me help…
I just looked at her, Windi was going to be so pissed off.
And when I woke up this morning, my kitchen was fogged in…
Emon, is that where this fog outside is coming from?
Yeah, it is. I have had to leave every window and door open to clear it out of my house.
Oh, Emon…
I didn’t mean for it to happen, Kitty, I ...
I put my arm around her, that usually happy, bubbly face was looking so forlorn and a little scared.
It will be okay Emon, maybe Windi will have calmed down by this morning.
She looked at me and her face started to brighten.
You think so, Kitty…
I thought to myself. No, I am afraid Windi is not going to be happy. The door chimes tinkled, letting me know someone had entered.
Morning Kitty. Emon…
Damn and blast, Windi was early.
Morning, Windi.
Emon was shuffling her feet from side to side.
Hello, Emon. I will get your breakfast shortly; I assume you’re having your usual.
Emon just looked at Windi, slowly a smile started to return.
Oh yes please Windi, that would be lovely. Thank you.
Windi just looked at her and smiled.
That’s okay, pet.
She turned and walked into the kitchen. I was gobsmacked. Windi was way too calm, this was bad, a weather Witch is the reason behind the saying ‘the calm before the storm’.
So Emon, do you want a coffee to go with that?
Yes please.
Emon was smiling like the bloody Cheshire cat.
I knew she wouldn’t stay mad for too long Kitty.
Mmmm… here’s your coffee.
As Emon took her coffee, Windi came out of the kitchen with a paper bag n her hand, which she handed to her.
There you go Pet, now you go home and enjoy your breakfast.
Emon wrapped her arms around Windi and hugged her hard.
Thank you Windi! Thanks, Kitty. See you tomorrow!
With that said she walked out the door, picked up her broom and walked away. Windi looked at me.
Do you think she will ever try flying again Kitty?
After her last attempt who knows. She told mum it is safer to walk than fly, as it is not as far to fall.
Windi laughed.
She is an original our Emon.
I looked at Windi.
Do I have anything to be worried about?
No…not really…
Shit.
What do you mean by ‘not really’, Windi?
Well, I may have added a little bit of agrimony to her breakfast.
A sleeping herb, damn, sneaky bitch.
How much, exactly, is a little?
She looked at me, shrugged her shoulders.
Just a tad. Emon will sleep for a couple of days. That’s all.
Oh, Windi…
Don’t you ‘Oh Windi’ me Kitty! You should have seen my perfectly beautiful kitchen. Whatever she created ate everything. EVERYTHING Kitty. All that was left was the metal fixtures and pipes. All my lovely purple things, paint, china, all gone. After all the effort I put into it…
On this note, I could no longer contain myself and I started to laugh.
What’s so funny, Kitty?
All the work... Windi, you cast a spell, which, I will remind you took me weeks too perfect, you spent mere seconds of your…
Well yes …but…
The door chimes tinkled.
Good morning girls
My Mum, Garmi, walked over to us and hugged me.
Morning mum.
Morning Garmi.
My that fog is certainly thick this morning almost feels created….
Windi and I looked at one another and burst out laughing. Mum just looked at us, as she walked through to the kitchen.
Must be a funny fog then.
We laughed even harder.
You have no idea, Mum.
No you don’t but I will tell you!
Windi promptly followed Mum out the back.
So do tell Windi…
Emon….
Oh no…
Oh yes…well…she came…
I so did not need to hear it all again, so I turned on our local radio station; WWRS-WA (Witches, Warlocks Radio Station-Warlock Airwaves), just in time to hear one of my favourite songs; Warlocks that I love by The Gins, a local witch and warlock duo who make magical music together.
Chapter Two
The fog was still thick outside as my regular customers started to wander in. It was turning out to be an interesting Monday. Just as I thought this, a flash of black and red flew past the shop front, there was a huge screeching sound and then silence. I bet I know who that was. Yep, our resident hoon witch; Komo.
I got my new ride, Kitty! Come check her out.
Good morning, Komo.
Komo stopped and looked at me.
Morning Kitty…Come on!!
I walked outside with her, so she could proudly show me her new broom, it was glossy black with purple highlights in the brushes, just like her hair.
Very nice, Komo...
Isn’t she, though! She is such a beauty.
Komo was beaming.
Watch this Kitty!
She mounted her broom, gripped the front and flew off at high speed, straight along the footpath and then shot straight up into the fog. I could hear her laughing, cackling actually. As you may have gathered our lovely little town is full of Witches and Warlocks, and a few others.
HERE I COME!! HAHAHAHA!
Komo came screaming out of the fog and nearly took the head of the local constabulary; Officer Blake Lovemoor, who had just pulled up on his police squad broom, ducked just in time as Komo flew on and up again.
Damn and Blast, Komo!!
Morning, Blake.
Morning Kitty, I see Komo has a new ride.
Yeah, she does, you’re not going to confiscate it straight away are you?
Blake just looked at me.
You know that I should, Kitty...
I know, you’ll do what is right Blake, you always do.
He just looked at me and smiled.
I do believe that she is coming back our way, I think we should move!
As Blake said this, we stepped back and just in time too. Komo came diving out of the fog with wild abandon and screeched to a halt in front of us.
Woooo! What a rush!
Morning, Komo!
Hey, Blake. Isn’t she lovely!
She held her new ride for him to see. The broom seemed a bit antsy, her brushes were still jiggling.
Yes, she is lovely. I see it is the latest model…
It sure is! I…
So what I just witnessed was only a one off joy ride, wasn’t it Komo!
She looked at him like he was mad, she was just about to say something, when I noticed her glance at his Warlock Police badge. She looked up at him.
Yes that’s right Blake, just a one off, I had to clear the cobwebs from her brushes. It won’t happen again.
I certainly hope not Komo, as I would hate to have to arrest you for hooning, as then I would have to confiscate your new ride and I really don’t want to have to do that.
Komo took a deep breath and looked at him.
"No…No that won’t happen. You won’t have to do that; I will be a good girl.
