Weight Loss in 10,000 Steps a Day - Kirk Mahoney

    Introduction

You may be in a hurry for specific information and advice in this book, so you may not want to read it from beginning to end. Here are some key topics that you may want covered by the book, along with where you can find the topics covered.

    If you …

    • Want to get motivated to walk 10,000 steps a day, then go to the The Overweight/Obesity Epidemic chapter.

    • Want to understand how steps walked turn into weight lost, then go to the The Weight-Loss Power of 10,000 Steps a Day chapter.

    • Want to know how else walking can help you, then go to the But, Wait! There’s More! chapter.

    • Want to jump straight into the program, then The Program chapter is where to go.

    • Want to know more about the number 10,000, then go to the Conclusion chapter.

    • Want to look up the research behind what’s in the book, then go to the References chapter.

Assuming that you have not dashed off to another part of this book, let’s continue with the introduction!

There must be a gazillion books about weight loss. Okay, maybe I exaggerated, and it’s only a zillion, but let me talk first about what this book is not:

    • This IS NOT a lose weight quickly program.

    • This IS NOT a diet book.

First, quick weight loss sounds great but often leads to eventual return of the lost weight. It can even lead to weight gain instead of loss. Second, I am not a dietitian or a nutritionist.

Here is what this book is:

    • This IS a guide to losing weight slowly.

    • This IS a lifestyle recommendation.

I am a former scientist who has written several books about running and walking. I will show you how to introduce small habits into your lifestyle over many weeks so that you can walk 10,000 steps a day as a larger habit. And, I will show you how this will let you lose weight in a slow, reliable, and almost mindless way.

I believe that happiness affects performance. I believe that the slow but sure weight loss that you can achieve through walking 10,000 steps a day can raise your happiness. And, I predict that you will look forward to walking 10,000 steps a day … and maybe walk – or run – even more!

    About this Second Edition

The first edition of this book included a guide to several programs for walking 10,000 steps a day. I also included feature-by-feature comparisons and my picks for technical and budget winners. Some readers of the first edition loved this programs-guide approach; others hated it. I intended the first
