      Introduction

      Originally intended to foreshadow a Nazi invasion of Great Britain in Autumn 1940 which Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) postponed several times, the Battle of Britain was the most colossal air combat history had ever known. Hitler’s aim was to destroy British Air Forces in the space of several weeks and laugh in the face of Marshal Goering’s optimism. This would facilitate a German invasion of British soil; if the Nazis succeeded in crossing the channel, their victory in Western Europe would be complete. Once Britain had been conquered, Hitler planned to send troops back eastward to spearhead an attack on the USSR in spring 1941 to realise his vision as described in his 1923 autobiography Mein Kampf: Europe ruled by Germany where Communism was defeated and Eastern Europe was reduced to slavery. This was to be achieved through Blitzkrieg military strategy, where opponents’ defences were quickly defeated through short intense attacks, Germany being incapable of sustaining a more prolonged war.
