    After a career at a Scottish bar, doing a lot of criminal defence work, then on the bench, when he sometimes sat as a judge in High Court murder trials, Ian Simpson took up crime writing. He was brought up in St Andrews, where he played off a low golf handicap, and lives in Edinburgh.
