Elana Dykewomon’s poetry bears witness to the lives of lesbians. She asks and demands that we be responsible and responsive to one another; that we bring care, compassion, accountability, and love in the proper proportions. These are poems that help us understand the contours of sexism, homophobia, racism, and anti-Semitism. And they are poems that illuminate what we can ask from and offer one another.
Drawing on Dykewomon’s impressive body of poetry, What Can I Ask: New and Selected Poems 1975-2015 assembles into a single volume poems from Dykewomon’s three published collections, They Will Know Me By My Teeth (Megaera Press, 1976), Fragments from Lesbos (Diaspora Distribution, 1981), and Nothing Will Be As Sweet as the Taste (Onlywomen Press, 1995), as well as a selection of newer, uncollected poems. Dykewomon continues asking questions and reaching for answers, demonstrating the power of poetry to comfort and enrage, inspire and arouse.

When I was very young, I used to listen secretly to late-night discussions by my parents about physics. I would go to sleep with strange words of atoms and molecules, Marie Curie, and Newton’s laws. But never did I dream as a girl in the sixties in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, that one day I would encounter a poem where "A Law of Physics would become a lesbian love story in the midst of the misogyny of the true tragedy of 1911, where the core of the famous law of mass and acceleration that my parents believed in would become an oath of lesbian love winning over death.
A Law of Physics," a masterpiece among Elana Dykewomon’s poems, is about not only the law of physics, but the law of fathers and therefore the entirety of history. I read this poem not only as disobedient to civilization, but as an entrance to a new world of love of women that never before existed in this way, that never before we could even know how to dream it alone. Nothing will be as sweet as the taste.
Yes, I decided, in 2008, that we lesbians must translate this poem and show it to everyone we love.
The first time I saw Elana Dykewomon was in a book of photographs by Joan E. Biren. I bought Making a Way: Lesbians Out Front, (Glad Hag Books, 1987) at the famous Sisterwrite feminist bookstore in London during one of my hitchhiking journeys in Europe at the end of the eighties. I found both of JEB’s books, this one and Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians (1979), and ever after looked in awe and admiration, paging through each of them so many times until I remembered every face in there. The portraits of lesbians in these JEB books were the family I wished to have. I was on a way to become a feminist lesbian in Eastern Europe, and the image and the name of Elana Dykewomon was one of those in my butch pocket. JEB’s photograph showed a big woman with her tongue out, which I saw then as a lesbian mocking the core of heteropatriarchy, including my father the physicist.

The second time I saw Elana Dykewomon was in a cafeteria in Jerusalem in 2005 at the Women in Black International Conference. She was sitting at a table, very ordinary, having breakfast. I looked at her and thought, I cannot believe it, I know this big woman from somewhere so close to my heart. I just could not remember where I knew her from, while at the same time I knew her so well. Watching her eat, I also thought, This woman is so famous in the lesbian world, how is it possible that all these lesbians sitting near me are not screaming her name out, or lining up in a queue to talk to her . As I could not remember where do I know her from, I thought maybe she would know. I almost jumped to sit near her, telling her who I am, but that would not make any sense to Elana Dykewomon! Hm, I thought, something is unusual here, I had to think fast: I know her well, she does not know me at all —so how did I meet her then, for goddess’s sake? But, as the laws of deduction and induction were my youth time friends, I had to reason: if not alive, I met this mega lesbian in a photograph! Then it clicked: Yes, the book. The Golden Photo Books of My Lesbian Childhood! I had found one of the book’s characters in person, finally! Here she was: my lesbian-soul-family member popped out in front of me in her full smile. I was excited. Just imagine how excited I was! I looked Elana Dykewomon straight in her charming face. My long-time longing sister is here . I was not able to take my eyes away from her. Elana Dykewomon’s smile growing even wider and more sparkling. Finally, I shouted, The Book! I know you from the JEB book!
Ah good,
she said.
Very easy the words came out of her, like spring water. She was smiling; I was smiling. The rest is a herstory of lesbian comradeship.
