      Hey there, I whispered into the mouthpiece of the telephone nestled against my ear.

      Hey, big head she responded.

      Her voice was flat. I was used to hearing Naomi coo with excitement over the phone whenever we spoke, so I immediately knew something was wrong.

      You good babes? I asked gently.

      Yes I am honey she responded. Her response sounded tentative. What about you?

      I’m fine babes. I kinda missed you, so I decided to call since it’s been a while. Are you sure you’re fine, really fine?

      Yes, I am jare, just a little tired. I miss you too.

      She was trying very hard to cover up, but I knew my Naomi.

      Aww, I soothed. Be easy mami. Life’s short you know. Breathe and take things easy girl.

      I pictured her smiling when I told her to breathe. She always did anytime I used the word when we were still together.

      Meanwhile, how’s he?

      A few seconds ticked by before she responded to that one.

      Fine. He’s fine. And how’s she?

      It was my turn to smile ruefully.

      There’s no she yet.

      Concern raised her voice several levels.

      Still?

      Yes. Still. I answered.

      She sighed.

      I’m sorry Ini. I am so sorry.

      I laughed aloud.

      Babes, don’t be. You know I’m fine. In fact, to convince you I am I’ll be in Lagos by the end of the month. Then you can confirm with your own eyes. We can catch a movie or something.

      The transformation in her voice was instant and obvious.

      Really? Yay! Can we squeeze in a meal too, preferably dinner? Please? There’s this fantastic new Chinese restaurant on Ozumba that I’ve been saving for the right occasion. You have to let me take you there Ini.

      No problems dearie. It’s your city. Who am I to stop you from treating me in Lasgidi?

      Thank you! Yes, it is, and I’ll gladly show you a few of the other new delights in town if you can spare the time. Buzz me when your arrival date is confirmed will you? I’ll draw up a special list of places just for you. I’m so thrilled. My mind is already counting down.

      Roger that ma’am, I said after another bout of laughter. I have to go now though. From where I stand I can see my boss, and I can see he is already swelling up and turning blue in the face. We don’t want him to explode while I’m here do we?

      She laughed, and it felt like a cool evening shower after a particularly hot and sticky day.

      No we don’t. Now go darling.

      Aight babes. You’ll be good now yes?
