You’ll find a long list of thankyous at the end of this book. It seemed just fair to let the people I love know that I really do love them.
Thank you for reading this. I hope you enjoy the story.
They might have told you that it is great fun, but it is not. Let me tell you, being born in Italy might be awesome and there is of course a certain sense of historicity
in telling people: Oh, you know, I’m from Rome
, but at the end of the day you end up in bed, listening to some music and somehow it always turns out to be Canadian music. You can’t avoid it and you just start wondering: How is it that every famous singer I love was born in Canada? I gotta go there
. So I guess the story of her
life begins here. In a red-orange bed, where she discovered Avril Lavigne.
She was born near Rome, to be fair, in a very small city. When she was just a little girl, it looked to her as if her hometown was the best place anybody could hope to live in. I bet you haven’t even heard of it: Frosinone. See? You are looking it up on Google Maps. But I’m gonna tell you something that Google won’t tell you: Frosinone was the place where all her best friends fell in love, where her little cousin was born, where her first imaginary dog shook his little brown tail for the first time. Google will tell you that Frosinone is halfway between crap and supercrap, but it is not. It’s just an ordinary city, like many others. To her it was special nonetheless and it has been like that for quite a long time.
She used to wake up, smile at the world – at times – and start her day. It was all about a well-rehearsed routine, a comfortable old group of people and a small family. And her crushes, yeah. She was always experiencing new crushes.
On that morning, she woke up and pulled the covers off the bed. It was then, in the middle of such an ordinary action, that she realized she truly needed a goal in her life. She was thirteen and she was about to finish middle school. It was time for her to pick up a dream in the ocean of wasted dreams and stick to it. If she was supposed to dream, she would dream big. She was too young to know that life was pretty
