Recipes from Tommy's Villa Venice - D. A. Hile
Introduction
Tommy Alessio, my father, was a restauranteur in Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1951 through his retirement in 1973. He was most famous for Tommy’s Villa Venice, winner of five stars from the Mobile Travel Guide in 1961.
His first restaurant, the LaScala introduced Tulsans to gourmet cooking. At that time in the early 1950s, the typical dinner consisted of comfort or fried foods such as meatloaf, catfish, and chicken fried steak. Dad had the first pizza oven in Tulsa. His charbroiled burgers, New York strip steak sandwich, and complimentary pickle bowl were hits. He later sold the Patio Grill to one of his waitresses, Goldie Crowe, who built it into a well-known Oklahoma franchise.
At the request of Mayor LaFortune, Dad also opened the 19th Hole at LaFortune Park, the Villa Fontana at 51st and Memorial, and the Downtown Villa Venice at 5th and Boulder. His last
