About this ebook

Field Marshal Montgomery's plan to get Second British Army behind the fortifications of the German Siegfried Line in 1944 led to the hugely ambitions Operation Market-Garden. Part of this plan called for a rapid advance from Belgium through Holland up to and across the lower Rhine by the British XXX Corps along a single road already dominated by airborne troops.

Their objective along this road was the bridge at Arnhem, the target of British and Polish airborne troops. Once XXX Corps had reached this bridge it would then make for the German industrial area of the Ruhr. The operation was bold in outlook but risky in concept.

Using specially commissioned artwork and detailed analysis, Ken Ford completes this trilogy on Operation Market-Garden by examining this attack which, if successful, could have shortened the war in the west considerably. Yet it turned out to be a bridge too far.

Ken Ford

Ken Ford has been writing military books for over 25 years. To date (May 2020) he has 40 titles to his name. His original career took him from the Physics laboratories of Southampton University to a position in middle management within British Telecoms, with numerous experiences as a road-bound traveler along the way. He began his full time writing career in 1992. He now lives on the outskirts of Southampton in southern England with his wife Valda. He spends most of his time writing when he is not annoying his three grandchildren Katelyn, Adam and Joseph, with boring tales of his adventurous past. (his two daughters Amanda and Joanne have heard it all before and are beyond boredom). Oh, and he also supports Southampton Football Club from his seat in the stands. By the way, his profile picture is fifty years old!

Solid rendering of the well-known battle; this is the third in a series produced by Osprey, and this looks at the battle from the point of view of XXX Corps, the British Army unit that carried the main burden of attempting to relieve the airborne forces that had seized the bridges central to Operation Market-Garden. As usual, a wealth of illustrations, and the typical, logical organization of the series. Those that have either read Cornelius Ryan's famous book, or seen the movie based on it, will be familiar with the points in discussion, but it's still good to read.
