Chapter 1:
It was 6:00am, when I heard a tapping noise at my window. My dorm room was on the second floor, so I figured that it was probably a pesky blackbird.
I got out of bed to see what the noise was, and felt a wave of pain. I saw scratches and bruises all over my body, and then I remembered what I did the night before.
I heard the tapping noise again. It was getting louder, and more persistent, so I threw open the curtains.
Aaaahaaah!
I screamed when I saw Colin looking in my window.
Let me in.
No! What are you doing out there?
I'm checking up on you.
Why? I'm fine.
You haven't come out of your room, for over a day and a half.
What the heck are you talking about? It's 6:00 in the morning.
It's Tuesday.
Seriously?
"Yes, and umm maybe you should think about taking a
shower. You look like someone tossed a shovel full dirt in your face."
Huh?
But, hey, I think those Rainbow Kitty flannel pajamas you're wearing are kind of hot.
STOP LOOKING AT ME!
Why? I said you look hot.
That's not the point, Colin. YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE HERE! Go wait for me in the dining hall, like a normal person would.
Why, are you embarrassed?
No.
Good, because you look like a demented hobo.
Shut up! I do not.
Yea, you do. A really hot looking demented hobo
GO AWAY!
Calm down, Agi. I had to climb up here, because the Dorm Matron wouldn't let me in to see if you're okay.
Well, duh, her job is to keep crazy boyfriends out of the girl's dorm.
I heard a knock at my door. Holy crappers! Sssh, DON'T MAKE ANY NOISE!
Actually, you're the one who is yelling.
Seriously, Colin, we can't draw attention to ourselves, especially after what we did last night.
I know, sssh, calm down, Agi.
OH MY GOD, GO AWAY, COLIN!
I said, while shutting the curtains on his face.
I heard another knock, and when I opened the door, I saw a girl standing in the doorway. She was carrying two suit cases, and she looked as if she was expecting me to invite her in. Umm, may I help you?
I'm your new roommate.
What? But it's spring. The semester is almost over.
Here is my room assignment sheet.
The girl handed me the sheet of paper, as she walked past me. I didn't know how to respond. It hadn't occurred to me that they would replace Lizzy so quickly. What's your name?
I asked.
My name is Kasia, is this my bed?
Apparently....
I mumbled.
I heard a noise outside my window, and it occurred to me that Colin might have fallen off the ledge.
Are you okay?
Kasia asked.
Huh? Yea, of course I am. Why do you ask?
You seem a little distracted.
Well, it's been kind of a crazy weekend for me.
I opened the curtains, but I didn't see Colin, so I popped my head out the window. I was hoping not to see a crumpled body on the ground, and thankfully, I only saw grass and shrubs.
Seriously, are you okay?
Kasia asked.
Yea, I was just aaa checking the weather. Yup, it's kind of cloudy outside. Dress warm, ha ha ha....
Yes, I'll do that.
Okay then, I guess I'll take my shower now. So, I'm just going to go in here, the bathroom, and take a shower.
Okay....
Kasia said, looking at me like I was a coo coo bird.
I closed the door to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. It was worse than I thought. I had twigs and leaves in my hair, and my skin was covered with dirt and dried sweat.
I turned the hot water on and put my dirty clothes in a pile on the floor. I stepped into the shower. The hot water felt good and I felt relieved. I made sure not too long, because I didn't want to leave Kasia alone in my room. I didn't want her snooping around or going through my stuff.
I got out of the shower, dried myself off, and wrapped my towel around me. The image in the mirror was a great improvement. I was clean, reinvigorated, and felt confident again. More importantly, I was ready to go back into my room and reestablish myself.
After all, it was my room, and my school. Why was I worried about what Kasia thought of me? She was the stranger, not me. I would be nice of course, but I am Agi Redshield, and I had to remember that.
I opened the door and walked into the center of the room. I noticed that Kasia was sitting on Lizzy's bed. She had an odd look on her face, like she was examining me, figuring out my strengths and weaknesses.
I was determined not to show any, but then I realized that I would have to dress in front of her. If I picked up my clothes and changed in the bathroom, or even worse cowered in the closet, I would be seen as weak. I knew it would be awkward, but I knew what I had to do.
I took my time walking to my closet, and I could feel her staring at my back.
I picked out the clothes I wanted to wear and laid them on my bed. Kasia was still staring at me, not saying a word, but I refused to let that bother me.
I stood before Kasia and dropped my towel to the floor. I didn't engage in nervous chatter, and I didn't rush to put my clothes on either. I wanted her to know that there was nothing about me that I was ashamed of. There were no weaknesses to be exploited, and that I was her equal, if not her better.
As I calmly reached for my underwear, I noticed that her expression had changed. She was smiling at me, and I wondered what see was thinking.
Would you like me to show you around school?
I asked, as I finished dressing.
Yes, I would.
The Melton Conservatory is truly an amazing school.
I noticed, fine furniture, velvet curtains... are all the dorm rooms like this?
Well, no.
I didn't explain why, because I didn't want to give her the impression that I was an elitist. Kasia, come look out the window, and see the view.
When Kasia stood next to me, I realized that she was muscular for a girl.
Oh wow, that truly is amazing.
Kasia said.
It's called the great lawn.
It looks like a palace garden, but what's that, on the other side of the fence?
It's a graveyard.
Well, that's kind of creepy
Does that scare you?
Well, no....
I could tell that Kasia was lying, the graveyard did creep her out. See that big stone building in the graveyard?
I asked.
Which one?
The biggest one. It's covered with vines, and there is a small round window about 9 feet off the ground. See it?
Yes, what is that?
"It's a tomb. I was
