Mahru crouched just inside the tide line, where the yellow sand of the beach firmed into crusty brown solidity under the umber skin of his feet. Right where the clear water kept only the tips of its white caps as it flowed in, carrying a cool spray that smelled of brine and a deeper hint of bass that told Mahru that his father’s haul would be plentiful today.
Mahru’s stomach growled at the prospect of fresh roast bass with lemons and guarana, and hints of açaí.
But that was distraction, same as when he looked up at the cries of the seagulls or around at the whistles of the other boys or the corrective admonishments of their teachers.
Mahru, like the two dozen other boys on the verge of manhood who lined that beach that warm summer morning, wore the white linen shorts and shirt of their transitional status, and crouched at the waterline to practice whistling the water.
Mahru shoved his wild brown locks out of his eyes again and rubbed his skinny hands, then cupped them and scooped up a handful of water as the next wave came in and rolled
