    Contemporary Timeline

Because my series are interlocking, characters cross over into other books and they share a timeline. This list will allow you to figure out where the book in your hands falls in the timeline and if you spot a character you want to know more about, track them down in another book. The dates provided are not the years the books were published, or even the years the books were written, but when the action in that book took place. Shorts show up in my newsletter.

    Chapter One

Marie checked her pocket for her cell phone before locking the office door and turning to the circle. It was unlikely anyone would have an emergency with half the town at the reception, but better safe than sorry. She didn’t have any more appointments today and both Ellen and Luke had asked for the afternoon off. Nancy stood next to a long table by the gazebo cutting subs from her shop into smaller sections. She wore jeans and a knit top so Marie assumed she hadn’t been invited to the ceremony either, but since she was bringing food, she must have been asked to the picnic reception. Marie checked traffic before crossing the street and strolling as casually as she could to the buffet table where Nancy was working. Party starts soon?

They should be on their way back from the pictures. You’re staying for the picnic, aren’t you?

Might as well be honest. She’d gotten plenty of people into VIP areas because they told her they wanted in. It had earned her a lot of fake friends, which she didn’t intend to be. I didn’t get an invitation.

Nancy snorted. Invitation? Weaver’s Circle doesn’t stand on ceremony.

Maybe she hadn’t needed an invitation. The last wedding she’d been at had hired security to keep crashers and press out. Do you need help setting up?

Nancy glanced up. Sure, you want to stack these on that tray? I should have cut these down in the shop. I’m not sure what I was thinking.

You were thinking of full servings instead of buffet, Judy said, setting a silver server into the holder. She still wore a blue cotton dress because she had been invited to the ceremony. Put the sandwiches between the salads and the hot food.

Marie took the tray she had piled with three-inch sub sections and placed it in a gap on the table. Where’s the cake?

That’s in the fridge in the fellowship hall, Nancy said. It’ll come out when it’s time to do the cutting or the icing will melt.

Of course, that made sense. Marie fixed another tray of sub sections while Judy arranged flowers around the trays and made sure the canned heat under the hot servers was lit. Candy would be jealous. She put together beautiful weddings with a seven-figure budget, but these people could do it with good will and wild flowers.

Can you believe we’re doing this again in October? Nancy asked.

I’m not sure why Elaine and Beth didn’t get married at the same time. But I suppose each of them deserves their time in the sun.

Marie eavesdropped as she neatened a pile of napkins. She had met all the members of Bon Jovi and SendDown, but she didn’t know the bride or her friend beyond meeting with them about the Summer Festival and that one was marrying an old sweetheart today and the other was marrying a town newcomer in a few months. The groom’s father she had patched up a few times after bar fights or run-ins with the sidewalk when he was drunk, but he’d been through rehab now and it seemed to be sticking. From the highway came the sound of horns.

Here they come. Nancy pulled off her plastic gloves. Let’s get this party started.

The fire engine stopped at the top of the circle and Johnny jumped down to help Elaine navigate the truck in her simple white dress. Her bridesmaids, Beth Wilson and Lily Walker, wore green sundresses, same shade, but different cuts. The groomsmen, James Leoni and George Kline had on t-shirts printed to look like tuxedos. Marie wasn’t sure if Candy would be amused or horrified.

Why did they have to use the town fire truck again? Marie asked.

Because her parents did when they got married, Nancy said.

Naturally. Marie studied the wedding party. They looked so happy. And how had James Leoni managed to become such an integral part of the community in just over a year? She’d been here for two years, working one-on-one with many of the residents on their beloved pets and not a few farm animals, and she could still go through a day without anyone saying more than hello. She had to be doing something wrong.

People had been trickling in. The ones who lived in the neighborhoods off the circle walked, but a few from further afield had driven. Marie had not moved from her spot near the subs and people were lining up to get food.

Hello, Dr Franklin. Where’s your plate? Linda Raney asked.

I never got one. I was helping set up. Marie gestured to the table.

Linda handed her the plate she had and reached back for another one. It’s a lovely day for this. Isn’t it?

Yes, it is. They couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather.

And right after our most successful Summer Festival yet.

Yes. Why were they having this conversation?

I think that television show Lucy Ferrel was filming is really going to bring people to town next year.

Marie scanned the crowd for the former journalist. The pilot Lucy was pitching on small town festivals to The Travel Channel hadn’t been edited yet, let alone sold, but people in town didn’t know that and Marie couldn’t reveal her knowledge of how television worked without telling them who she was and who she was related to. She picked up a sandwich and sidled to the fried chicken. Yes, that would be great for the pet adoption event.

It is so good of you to have those animals out. I’m sure you emptied out the shelter this year. Linda followed her along the buffet table.

Not quite, but we did find homes for a lot of the animals.

I’m sure it helps that you give them check ups and do all their shots.

Yes. People are more comfortable adopting a pet when they know it’s in good health. Except she did the same thing at the shelter every Tuesday. What was the point of this exchange?

I wanted to talk to you about Sweetie.

There it was. Linda’s daughter’s elderly cat. Of course.

    She’s acting funny.

Marie clenched her teeth before she snapped. Funny how?

She’s drinking a lot, but instead of using her litter box, she’s peeing on the floor outside it. And she cries a lot.

Marie nodded as she grabbed a Cherry Coke out of the ice filled tub at the end of the table. And her eyes?

They’re worse. I’m not sure she can even see anything anymore. Do you think that’s why she isn’t going in the litter box?

I think Sweetie is very old, and it’s showing. She’s fifteen? Sixteen? All the information was on Sweetie’s chart. If they could have this conversation in the office, it would be easier.

We got her for Becky’s third birthday. Becky squeezed her too hard and Sweetie scratched her.

People were always so surprised when animals defended themselves. Marie sat down at one of the tables scattered around the circle. And that makes Sweetie what?

Seventeen. Linda settled next to Marie, frowning as if she was stating that the sky was blue and rain fell down.

Well, seventeen is quite old for a cat. Last time she was in, I told you the cataracts would not get any better and she would go blind. She was also then showing signs of arthritis, which could be why she isn’t using her litter box. It’s painful for her to climb in and out. Excessive drinking and urination could indicate kidney failure, which is quite common among cats Sweetie’s age. Make an appointment Monday for me to take a look at her, but honestly, at seventeen, you are going to have to think about Sweetie’s quality of life.

    What?

Do you want Sweetie to be in constant pain?

    Of course not.

Then we should start discussing at what point we need to talk about putting her to sleep.

Linda gasped and dropped her soda. Marie righted it before all of it glugged
