CHAPTER 1 – UNFAIR WORLD
The first time Salma realized how unfair the world is towards women was when she was 8 years old. It was a family function and Salma was excited to meet her cousins who were about her age. She ran towards them and started playing with them.
Salma, Razia, Asma come over here
called her uncle Majid. The girls went to him while the boys continued playing in the mud.
Girls, why don’t you go inside and play with some dolls. Girls should not play with boys
said Majid. They all knew what a tyrant Majid was knew not to question him.
Also tell you mothers to put a hijab on you all
he added as they were about to leave inside.
At that time Salma did not know why girls weren’t allowed to play physical games or even mingle with male cousins but gradually she understood how the world has defined rules for women at every step of their life. How they need to dress, talk, walk, eat, sleep etc.
Salma hated the putting on the hijab.
Mom, but Salman doesn’t wear a hijab then why I should?
asked Salma innocently pointing at her elder brother. Her mother laughed hard which further irritated Salma.
So that you can preserve your modesty
said Hasina.
But don’t boys have to preserve their modesty?
she asked again.
"Stop your questioning and stand straight while I put it for you. You will understand the difference between boys and girls as you grow up.
*************************************
As Hasina had told, as Salma grew up she started understanding boys and girls live in different worlds. While men had complete freedom women were ruled by men at every stage of their lives. But Salma did not yearn for freedom as a woman; instead she loved the freedom of a man. Being a man meant no periods, no pregnancy, and absolute power of being head of the family. On the contrary she liked how men could exert that power over the women in their lives.
When she was 15 years old one of her father’s friends asked her what she wants to become.
A Man
pat came the reply. Everyone was taken aback. Sensing the mood she continued Just kidding Uncle. I want to do engineering
. But none of them knew that she was damn serious about it. Salman had decided that all the problems of her life will be resolved if she becomes a MAN.
But she knew better than not telling her parents or brother about it as she would first get a sound trashing and then locked up till she would get married. The sheer thought of marriage made her feel jittery. She couldn’t ever imagine sex with a man. Salma hated wearing salwar kameez but her dad strictly objected to jeans and western clothes so she had no other option. While her mother pestered her to help in the household work she envied Salman who used to enjoy roaming with friends and wouldn’t be asked to help around the house. Moreover him being the only son and there being 4 daughters (all three younger than Salma) made him the automatic heir of the family which also meant the crown prince.
The biggest paradox here was that though Salma hated to do wear a hijab or help in household stuff she believed it was right for women. She read the Quran from a male perspective and justified the shariah.
After puberty she went into a shell as she hated the way her body was developing breasts, voice getting higher, slow growth in height and slim build. Whenever she would masturbate she would do it imagining she was doing it with a girl and not a boy.
At 16 she completed her 11th and preparing for her 12th Std. Though she wasn’t studious she devised a plan that she would go for engineering in a college outside her city so that she can stay in a hostel and live life as per her wish.
When she expressed this wish her parents rejected the ides out rightly as it’s not safe for a girl to stay alone in a different city. All her pleas went in vain. She felt like living in an eternal
