Lessons in Faith - Steve C. Roberts

    Part I~ Faith is Belief

God wants us to have faith, but for us to have Faith, we must first understand what faith is. Faith is not a blind leap in the dark without knowledge. There is another word for that... foolishness.

So, how is faith different? It is simple: God has pointed in the direction He wants us to go, and faith is taking that next step toward that destination.

The key to faith is understanding that God has already proven that we can trust the direction He has pointed us toward. He does not expect us to blindly act without assurance that He will provide, but He expects us to act based on His prior interactions with us.

Simply put, the inception of faith is belief.

Faith Decreed: The First Test of Obedience

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord... (Psalm 37:23)

Contrary to popular opinion, faith is not a blind leap in the dark. It is a trust and belief that is based on the foundation of facts that God has already provided to us. Every time that God has asked man to have faith... i.e. believe something, He has preceded it with the evidence, or reason, why man should believe it. Unfortunately, most Christians suffer from a lack of knowledge. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge... (Hosea 4:6) That lack of knowledge is what inhibits our faith.

As we study faith, we will notice that God has an order to the methods that He uses is His dealings with man, and our response will determine what level of blessings we will receive as a result.

What do I mean by that?

Jesus told his disciples, ...If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. (Matthew 21:21) Yet, how many mountains has your faith moved? For that matter, how many mountains have been recorded being moved by anyone?

    Not too many, right? Why?

Because there is an order to the steps of faith that God requires us to take. Faith is shown when God gives us the proof that He works, and based on that proof, asks us to trust Him to take the next step.

An example of this was when Peter walked on the water. Jesus did not just pop up out of
