      PROLOGUE.

      My family owns a small cabin on a lake in the Adirondacks. There’s an old wooden swing hanging from a pine tree branch at the border of the road and our property. It was always old and in disrepair. When I was young, I asked my father to move it closer to the lake so I could swing and play on it. He said no. He said he and Mom liked it where it was because it was a good marker for our cabin.

      It was also a metaphor, but they didn’t tell me that.

      It was a three hour drive from my college to my house, but only two hours from my college to my family’s lake cabin. After my last final freshman year, instead of driving home, I drove to the cabin.

      That was a mistake.

      Early May is usually too cold to go swimming, but my parents would still open up the cabin in preparation for Memorial Day. I wasn’t surprised to see my mother’s car in the parking spot on the opposite side of the road from the cabin.

      Like many lakes in the Adirondacks, our lake had a road circling it. The prime properties were right on the water, the slightly lesser properties were on the opposite side of the road with waterfront rights
