About the Author

Chapter One

Efrain, teach me how to fight.

Thirty-year-old Efrain Suarez almost fell off his chair, but he managed to get a hold of himself and maintained a blank expression before Blaze. Efrain combed his finger through his short, layered hair. He canceled his previous arrangement with a well-known black market dealer in Manila just for this?

Blaze Romano, the man who founded Flame Squad with him, had called him back to their new hideout in Cebu, saying it was urgent. Now, he felt like punching Blaze’s cheeky face, or grab Blaze’s bleached hair and toss him into the wall.

Blaze had been in a coma for more than two months after being held hostage and shot by Cidro, Blaze’s brother-in-law. With Cidro’s gang which was bigger and more influential, Flame Squad had suffered greatly and was still recovering from the war between their groups. Thankfully—Luella—Blaze’s wife, was currently doing a remarkable job of fulfilling Blaze's duties. However, from the way Blaze spoke on the phone, Efrain thought maybe another disaster had befallen them.

Efrain slowly exhaled, Why do you want to learn all of a sudden, boss?

Blaze glared at him. Stop calling me that! I let you say it when my life was in danger, but you should know better, especially when no one’s around.

Sorry, I’m not used to it.

Then get over it. Other members calling me boss is fine, but more than anything, you’re a friend. Blaze propped his elbow up on the bed and Efrain was immediately on his feet to assist him, but Blaze rejected him by swatting his hand away.

Efrain settled back on his seat and watched as Blaze sat on the bed. Six years ago, it wasn’t even in Efrain’s wildest fantasies that the day would come when he would respect a man he had previously hunted down and thrown behind bars. But everything in life changes and he was no exception.

On his quest to save Monica, his ex-girlfriend, from the hands of the Japanese yakuza in the Philippines, Efrain had sacrificed an innocent man in exchange for a large sum from Blaze. But the only thing he unraveled was that his perfect life had been nothing but an illusion. He was used and abused. He lost his will to live and it was only thanks to Blaze, who approached him after his revelation, that Efrain found a new goal in life. He walked these dark paths as Blaze’s shadow to make those responsible for ruining his life pay while working to help those who had been denied of the justice they deserved.

In a world swarming with crimes, only criminals can cut down the roots of other criminals.

Efrain waited for Blaze to get comfortable before speaking up. Okay then, why do you suddenly want to learn how to fight?

Blaze glanced at the metal door and eyed the medical equipment around his room in the underground base of their vacation house. Up until recently, every instrument had been connected to Blaze and a doctor, who swore confidentiality, had been dropping by to check up on him. As the
