      When the first gift arrived, Lily thought nothing of it. The city was filled with any number of wealthy, bored, unattached men. She knew that she had garnered some attention since her arrival. The novelty of an adventuress among their social circle made her a rather sought after companion or simply a prize to be claimed.

      The first gift was wonderful. Beautiful lilies in an enormous and fabulously expensive vase. The entire bouquet must have cost a fortune, but she smiled at the thoughtfulness of the giver. Lily racked her brain, attempting to locate the would-be suitor who had taken the time to listen to her rather than go on only about himself. There didn’t appear to be a great many candidates.

      The card attached was bare except for the message and unsigned.

      Beauty never fades but lives in memory.

      Lily smiled. Suave, Eric Lawson, suave.

      She pushed the thoughts of her handsome friend aside, as she often did these days. Missing him was difficult and painful, and Lily Morgan had already dealt with enough of both in her life.

      The second gift was more puzzling. A necklace of gold with a lily on the end.

      Lily touched the necklace with delicate fingers. Who would do such a thing? Who among her suitors was this thoughtful?
