The author should have explained about Tilden,s disappearance. Seemed like a rushed and abrupt ending

Chapter 1

Taking another sip of her punch, Annie tapped the toe of her shoe as the fiddler began another round of Arkansas Traveler. The song always made her want to dance. But the prettier girls were always first choice at these events, and she paled in comparison to many of them. Still, Pa had assured her that she had a good heart and some lucky man would one day realize it and snatch her up for his own. She looked up as someone approached.

May I have this dance, Miss?

Annie stared into the emerald eyes of the new pastor, Travis Stuart. Just yesterday, her friend and new roommate, Josie, had been jesting her about what a perfect couple she and the new pastor would make. Matched up like pretty dolls, Josie had teased, referring to the green eyes and red hair that both of them boasted.

Pushing Josie’s words away, Annie returned the smile and took his hand. I’d be pleased, she said, knowing her cheeks were blooming a hint of rose by now. She would try to avoid eye contact with any of the brides, especially Josie.

Quite a crowd here, he grinned, almost shouting, as they took their first steps onto the noisy, crowded floor.

There usually is, she said. The pastor had arrived two weeks ago, and this was his first dance in Silver Ridge. And the fact that he had chosen her, over any of the others for his first dance, gave her more than a bit of the confidence she had lacked. Maybe tonight was going to be fun, after all.

The pace was fast and Travis Stuart was an excellent dancer. Annie pushed herself to keep up with him. It had been a long time since she had danced with a man that seemed to know what he was doing. So many of the miners just liked having a girl in their arms and didn’t bother to learn any of the steps, which left the girl’s feet tired and bruised. And made each dance a struggle to finish.

The song came to an end and he was about to release her hand, when an encore rendition was demanded by the crowd, so Annie found herself on the move again.

***

There now, that ought to satisfy your thirst, Travis grinned, as he handed Annie a tin cup of punch.

Thank you, she said, glad to have a cool drink and a moment off of the floor. She had danced three dances with him, so far. She had noticed some glances from a few of the girls. It didn’t seem right that he was giving all of his time to her. But how to shoo him in the other girl’s directions, she had no idea. And in truth, she was enjoying his attention.

So, tell me how long you’ve been in Silver Ridge, Annie, he said, taking a sip of his punch.

***

Annie smiled as she snuggled her head deeper into her pillow and stared at the filmy curtains that blew in the night breeze. Piano music sounded from the saloon just down the street, and sounds of people laughing and shouting drifted through the air.

She had danced almost every dance with Travis Stuart tonight. And not once had he looked at anyone else. Maybe Pa’s words were going to come true.

Chapter 2

Annie sniffed hard. She would not cry. Not again. She had carried the letter in her apron pocket since yesterday. And not even opened it. She all ready knew what it would say. Are you married? Not hello, Annie, we love you, Annie, we miss you, Annie. The only important question was, Are you married?

Why couldn’t her family understand that she didn’t want marriage to just anyone willing to ask? She wanted love. The kind that means something. The kind that lasts through the hard, struggling years ahead. And from the looks of this place, there would be plenty of hard times in the future.

And if she had thought that Pastor Travis Stuart was the answer to her prayers, then she had been wrong. He had been by to see her only one time since the dance. And that visit was to ask her to supply the Sunday morning flowers.

So, here she was, picking flowers for the service, where, tomorrow morning, she would be forced to sit and look at his handsome face for over an hour. And he would never even notice her. She shook away the thought. Of course he wouldn’t have his attention on her. He would be sharing God’s Word, not looking at the women out on the hard wood benches.

She blinked. It didn’t really matter what happened
