    CHAPTER ONE

Some say that we are responsible for our own destiny - we decide how our lives end up. And we do, but rather indirectly. We make decisions that can alter our lives, for either better or worse. These decisions can seem so insignificant at the time, yet can change our path forever. One such, seemingly insignificant decision, was Crystal Markson’s choice to go into work an hour early. Not for any reason other than she was already up and ready, and thought she could use the peace and quiet on set to run through her lines a few more times. Her drive in was completely normal - not much traffic for 5 am, although she did see a family of ducks on the side of the road. Even her walk to the production offices was completely uneventful - not a soul around to bother her. Strange, for the first day back on set, but the call sheet did say 9 am. Four solid hours of peace and quiet, which was exactly what she needed. Making herself a cup of coffee, she wandered into the read-through room - a big, open space with desks arranged in a huge square, so everyone could see everyone else. Picking a seat, she pulled her script out, settling in for a long day. Blowing gently on the steaming coffee in her hand, she moved to take a sip, freezing when she saw the person on the other side of the room, grinning wildly at her.

‘Oh, don’t stop on my account.’ She glared at him, not quite being able to make out who it was, but still annoyed nonetheless. He stood up, wandering over, then sat down beside her, his glasses sliding down his nose as he did so. ‘Didn’t think anyone else would be here this early. Thought I’d get in and start working early, make a good first impression, yeah?’ Nodding curtly, she turned back to her script, chewing on the end of her pen - part out of frustration, part out of nerves. The last time she had worked with this studio, she had worked with an experienced co-star. Now, she was working with someone different. All she knew was his name - Ryan Hayes, and she’d made the decision early on not to look him up, so she didn’t have an opinion on him before they even met. ‘You’re Crystal Markson, right?’

‘Oh...’ He was still grinning at her, his eyes sparkling. ‘Yes?’

‘Is that a question? Because I’m sure that’s your name. You feeling okay?’ She nodded, giving him a weak smile - maybe that would shut him up for a while, so she could focus. ‘Good, because I’d hate for you to be
