About this ebook

Caitlyn:
Leaving Texas was the hardest thing that I had ever had to do. But my career was in New York, I needed to move in order to set up a life for myself. My life and career began to come together, I had my dream job as a counselor, an apartment that I could afford and friends that made the sting of missing home bearable. Finding a man to share my life with was proving to be more of a challenge then I thought. I dated, and slept with a couple of men, but none that made me want to have a future with. That was until I met Jake Connolly. In our local bar, after work one day, was a cowboy standing by a jukebox. A cowboy that made me think of home. One kiss was all it took to have me in his bed. He was honest, said he could only give me one night, but I didn’t care, at that moment I just wanted him, and had him I did. It was the best night of my life that ended all too soon. I thought I would never see Jake again, but fate had other plans for us.

    Twisted Fate - J.A. Collard

    Chapter One

    Caitlyn

It started with a kiss, the day I knew that my life was never going to be the same.

It was an extremely busy day, I had seen clients one after the other, treating them for whatever reason led them into my therapy office. You see, I’m a counselor and work with a lot of couples who are having marital issues, whether it’s the wife or the husband being unfaithful in their marriage, or maybe either spouse feeling like they no longer want to be married. Either way, today just was one of those days.

So when Gabby, my best friend and work colleague asked me to go out for Friday-night drinks at the local bar, I couldn’t refuse. God knew I needed a wine or two. If I had known what I know now, I would have stayed home and watched my favorite show, Gossip Girl, with a red wine on the couch. I would have saved myself the heartache.

A couple of drinks in, I hear the familiar accent of a Texan. That accent was something I could never forget—I have a little of it myself having been bred and brought up there. My parents are still there.

Travelling my eyes over him, I take in his brown boots, dark denim jeans, red-and-blue plaid shirt, and a black cowboy hat on his head. His stance alone has me on the edge of my seat. The problem is, he’s talking to a gorgeous girl dressed in short denim shorts, cowboy boots, and a plaid shirt tied in a knot on her midriff, revealing her flat, toned stomach with a belly-button ring. His laugh comes out deep and husky as she whispers something in his ear, her hand lingering on his arm, exposed by his rolled-up sleeve. Stubble covers his jaw, and I’m dying to walk up to him so I can have a proper look at his features.

He shakes his head, and I see the female pout in disappointment. I see someone has your attention.

Smiling, I turn to find Gabby handing me a wine. I accept it graciously, and she takes a seat. "Now, he’s hot, he’s not from around here."

Obviously not, I say, turning away from her to look at him again. Focusing on his firm butt, I say, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything that fine around here, since I moved to New York.

    Go talk to him.

I snap my head toward her, eyes wide. Are you serious? I can’t do that.

Why not? He’s only a male, after all.

But… but…. He’s with her, I say, pointing to the beautiful girl who’s obviously flirting with him. I don’t know what makes him look over his shoulder at me then, but he does. He catches my stare and one side of his lip raises in a smirk.

Yup, he’s definitely gorgeous, Gabby whispers in my ear.

Not able to respond because I’m practically drooling over him, I just stare at this beautiful man. Two buttons are undone at his neck, revealing bronzed skin, probably from riding his horse. Damn, there goes my hormones.

He’s looking over at you, Caitlyn. Again, I don’t respond. His gaze is glued to mine, and I can’t make out the color of his eyes from here. Hazel? Amber? All I know is, I’ve never seen anything like them before. He turns fully toward me, the woman beside him still talking away, but he doesn’t respond; his attention is on me. I swallow hard when he quickly turns to the jukebox, tapping a button, and the song Strip it Down by Luke Bryan comes on. He whispers something in the woman’s ear, then begins to walk toward me. Oh my gosh, he’s coming over here, Gabby whispers.

Heat hits my cheeks, and I take a gulp of wine then place it back on the bar. I take him in as he reaches me, and I’m breathless—his eyes are amber.

Hello there, darlin’, wanna dance with this cowboy? Biting down on my bottom lip, I look down at his outstretched hand. No wedding ring—so far, so good.

What about her? I ask, nodding my head toward the woman, who now has her mouth wide open.

The cowboy looks over his shoulder, then back at me. I don’t want to dance with her, I want to dance with you.

His smile appears again, and a dimple graces his left cheek. Taking his hat off, he places it on my head, then tilts his own head to the side. It suits you, make this man happy and dance with me.

Of course she will, Gabby interrupts, nudging me so I practically fall off the stool.

Laughing, he leads me onto the dance floor, his hand at the small of my back. Feeling his warmth instantly, I let him take me into his arms in a slow dance. Boy, he can dance too.

My time here in New York has had me dating accountants, lawyers, even an FBI agent, but none have compared to this gorgeous creature in front of me. He is all male, and he’s a country boy, something my parents always wanted for me. Someone who understands the country life. It didn’t matter to them that I left to go to New York to study to become a counselor. Their hope was that I would someday come home and make my chosen career work there. I have to admit, I miss it, and right now, my heart wants me in Texas.

We dance to the country song, and I feel a sense of belonging. Here, now, in the arms of this cowboy, all my sorrows and feelings of being homesick vanish.

After I finished my studies, I was successful in obtaining a full-time job at an office in Manhattan, where I, along with two other counselors work. Gabby is one of them. I specialize in couples, problem marriages; Gabby specializes in people who have suffered a loss. Whether it’s a friend or a loved one, Gabby helps them get through it. Sometimes clients see her for a month, sometimes a year.

You going to tell me your name, sweetheart?

I tilt my head to look up at him, feeling my heart beat fast. What would you like it to be?

Smiling, he shakes his head. I just want honesty, darlin’, that’s all I ask.

My heart flutters, and I smile and reply, Caitlyn. It’s Caitlyn.

Why hello, Caitlyn. I’m Jacob, but my friends call me Jake.

There’s that gorgeous smile again. So, Jake, you obviously aren’t from around here. What brings you to New York?

Now that’s a boring story, he replies as his hand releases mine,
