With poetry we have an opportunity to utter healing, peace, confidence, inspirations, and laughter. Our words are powerful enough to draw people into our dreams but even more important, help transform their dreams into a reality. Wouldnt you agree that we have an obligation to whisper that life?

    Volume 1 includes poems to draw you into my world and to help you See through My Eyes. Just remember words can not move you without a soul and spirit.     Jeffrey Bernard Hicks

    Jeffrey Bernard Hicks was born in Emporia, Virginia to the late Queen E. Hicks. He graduated from Greensville County High School in June 1987 and entered the United States Air Force in December 1987. In 2000, while stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, a hidden poetic talent was unveiled. While in Nebraska, his poetry was used as part of a radio advertisement for a poetry club called The Groove. He also performed live poetry at the Cartier club, along with other great artists from BETs DEF Poetry. Jeffrey started a jazz and poetry night while temporarily assigned near the Mediterranean. He also combined some of his poetry over pictures for Fathers Day t-shirts at the Eden Baptist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Recently, one of his poems was featured at the Offutt Air Force Base February 2006 African American Heritage Committee Luncheon. The old saying, behind every great man is a woman is certainly true in his case. In 2000 during an Air Force deployment, he started to write poetry to impress a young lady that he had met a few days earlier. It is amazing what a case of mistaken identity can lead a person to do. Jeffrey used poetry as a conversational tool. Once the flow was turned on, it has remained active and continues to the present time. Understandably, it might also explain the reason for naming the theme for his first poetic series--Speaking From The Heart.

      Allow me to provide you both clarification and guidance through this Poetic journey. There are various stages in this journey just as there are in our Spiritual walk. To me, these stages are equivalent to the varied emotional feelings we feel. So you will see anger, hurt, romance, etc; a variety of emotions that affect every one of us. Just because you are saved or a Christian; it doesn’t exempt you from these feelings. Not only do we experience these emotions; but we react to them as well.

      As I looked through the selected poetry, there is still an underlining theme… ‘LOVE’. It reminds me that we all do things that are not pleasing and some things that we are ashamed of. It also reminded me of growth.

      I talked with my wife about this poetry book. Especially since some of the poetry was written before we met. She reminded me that I am not at the same place in my life as when I wrote some of those poems. Her words penetrated deeply within my heart. This book has dual meanings, It is a closure to some things and a platform to launch in a New Beginning.

      Now she is a part of me and encourages me to go forth with my dreams and desires. She also made me realize how my love grew from love to Love to LOVE. I believe that you will be able to tell that with my writing. You will be able to see a deeply rooted belief, I believe women are queens and should be treated as such.

      I went through a lot of hurt that needed to be healed. Restoration needed to take place, as well as forgiveness. Many of you will be able to identify with most of the poetry in this book. I didn’t try to be super deep, but I tried to display my feelings as open and honest as I could at that stage of my life. As I grew and matured, I learned to take obstacles and use them as an excuse to succeed. I allowed God to work through me to use them as steps towards victory.

      Finally, God gave me the talent and ability to write these poems. I literally sat down and began typing on my computer. As I reminded people whom I have encountered, It is easy for me to write about what is in my heart, because the Love of God resides there. Remember we are Spiritual beings living in a Natural world. Everything that we do in the Natural affects the Spiritual and everything we do in the Spiritual affects that Natural. Enjoy the journey and I hope to see you at the end.
