I dedicate this to my mother for showing me that anything is possible in this world if you work hard and believe. To my sisters, Ann, Ruth, Cindy, Dana and my husband Bob who stood by me through this long journey, and especially my son, Nicolas who was the inspiration and reason this book was written.

    CHAPTER 1

    NICK’S LIFE

The bell was about to ring at the St. Louis School for the weekend. This was the only time during the week that Nicolas Pricer ever looked at the clock. He was a pretty good student (when he wanted to be), and he enjoyed school, especially science and computer lab. But today was Friday afternoon, and Nick couldn’t wait to spend time with his best friends, Abbie, Christian, and Lucy, relaxing and hanging out.

As he watched the clock, Nick could have sworn it clicked slower. His teacher finished up her afternoon announcements, and finally there it was: ring. Have a good weekend, she told them. Nicolas gathered up his things and proceeded to the bike rack to wait for his friends.

    Nicolas! Lucy yelled.

Hi, he said. Where are Abbie and Christian?

They’ll be here in a minute, she answered. Lucy was the shortest of the group, but she had a great smile, brown eyes, and very fine light-blonde hair.

We’re coming! Abbie yelled as she walked toward them.

Sorry we’re late, Christian said. We got some last-minute homework.

Christian was the largest of the four. He had had a growth spurt over the Christmas break and had come back a little taller than the rest of them. Nicolas felt a twinge of jealousy as he looked up at his friend.

    Got any homework? Lucy asked.

A little bit, Nick told her.

Nicolas was of average height, with big brown eyes and bushy brown hair that never looked combed, even when he spent a lot of time on it. He was generally a pleasant, easygoing boy, but at thirteen he had developed the typical mood swings known to accompany teendom.

You want to come over to my house? he asked. We can get all our homework done now!

I wasn’t going to do mine till Sunday night, said Abbie with a smile.

Abbie was the most outgoing of the group. She was a bit taller than Nicolas, and he knew it. Nick always stood a little straighter next to her.

They all put on their helmets, grabbed their bikes, and headed to Nick’s house.

Remind me to call my mom when I get to your house, Lucy called as they sped down the road.

    Oh, me too, Christian said.

Ms. Elieff was really hard on us today. She made us take a pop quiz! On a Friday! Abbie told them.

Wow, that’s harsh, Nick said as the others groaned.

The group approached Nicolas’s house. They zipped up the driveway, dropped their bikes, and raced inside.

    Nick yelled, Dad, I’m home!

    Hi, Mr. Pricer! everyone yelled.

Mr. Pricer was just about to leave for work. He was a police officer and really liked his hours, because he was there when Nick got home. He didn’t mind leaving Nick home by himself for the hour and a half before his mother got home from work, knowing his son to be very responsible.

George Pricer was well built. He tried to stay in shape for work. He had a shaved head and looked very tough and intimidating. But he wasn’t, and all the kids knew it.

He came out of his bedroom in full uniform and saw Christian with his head in the fridge. Just don’t eat all the food, okay? he told Christian. I don’t know what I’ll do when Nick starts eating like you! He laughed.

Send him to Christian’s house! Abbie says.

You’re right! Great idea, Abbie! Mr. Pricer said with a smile.

Okay, Nicolas. Can I trust that you won’t demolish the house before your mom gets home? George asked, giving his son a hug.

Bye, Dad, Nicolas said, blushing slightly.

I’ll see you tomorrow, Mr. Pricer said, tousling his son’s hair. Bye, kids, he called to the others, grabbing his keys and heading out the door.

    Bye! the others yelled.

Surprisingly the entire group finished their homework by the time Nick’s mom, Ruth Pricer, arrived home.

Nicolas, you know I don’t mind that your friends come over, but you have to stop leaving your bikes in the driveway, she said as she walked in the door and laid her things down.

    Sorry, they all replied sheepishly.

How was your day? she asked as she hung up her jacket.

Pretty good. We got all our homework done, Nicolas said proudly.

Wow! Ruth said. That is something to celebrate! I say that calls for pizza!

    Can everybody stay? Nick asked.

Yes, as long as it’s okay with their parents, Ruth said as she went to the phone to order the pizza. Ruth was an athletic-looking woman with long dark hair that she wore mainly in a braid. Her eyes were much darker than Nick’s. She always joked with him that his eyes were light brown because his
