A most interest rock was standing on end in the sheep pasture. Even Max, with all his imagination, could never have thought how important it would be.

MAX and the SENTINEL ROCK
Maxwell Sinclair sat in his place in the schoolroom with excitement bumps popping up on his arms. He had his pencil and paper ready and his fingers jittered with eagerness.
Only two years ago he would have thought it was just another assignment from Miss Carmelita at the Prairie Academy school. The fact, now, was that he could still close his eyes and feel the fright he had felt in the dark, river-cave when he knew there was no way out. He was certain he would be there forever.
At that time, he had been just nine years old and the big excitement had not yet happened to him. It had not been an excitement like going to the fair at Oklahoma City and having an ice cream cone afterward. Instead, it was like an I’m not sure I’ll get out of this alive
kind of excitement.
Across the table from him sat Mandy Summers and she also had her paper and pencil ready. She was twiddling her fingers and biting her lips with nervousness. As soon as Miss Rosalie finished giving everyone their ten sheets of paper and two sharpened pencils, they could begin. This was perhaps the most important assignment in their whole school term.
Mandy re-crossed her feet at the ankles and bumped Max’s foot. She whispered, Excuse me
. Max nodded.
Then Miss Carmelita began, You have ten sheets of paper. You will write a history of your life so far, telling about the incidents you remember most. You must fill all ten pages. This is a big part of your final test for this year.
She looked around at each pupil, then continued, Do your best, but hurry along because when you finish, you will re-write everything on new sheets, paying close attention to spelling, punctuation, paragraphs and penmanship. When you finish, I will collect all 20 sheets, and from that you will get your grade in English grammar.
Max knew he was lucky to get to go to school, and he loved every day of it. He loved Miss Carmelita with her pink cheeks and red, curly hair. She was the one who gave the orders as to what would be done in class.
He also loved Miss Rosalie who had big, beautiful dark eyes and shiny black braids that wound around and around her head like a cap. Sometimes she pinned a flower in her hair. She was the one who made sure everyone did what Miss Carmelita said to do, and she knew how to make sure they did!
So now everyone in his class was going to tell the story of their life. They were to tell it in third person (which meant they couldn’t say I did
and must say Max did
. That would be easy if he just didn’t forget because of the excitement.
Now they could begin!
THE LIFE OF MAXWELL SINCLAIR
Until Max was five years old, there wasn’t much to remember. He had six older brothers, and the youngest one of them was ten years older than he was. Mostly, the brothers treated their little brother like a toy, or sometimes as a nuisance.
Harley, the brother who was twelve years older, was his favorite of the brothers. He was the one who usually treated Max as a real person.
When there was a discussion about what they would do with Max, Harley was the one with a good suggestion. Their pa had a big farm and there was a lot of work to do, but the six brothers had no trouble getting it done.
Whatever money was earned, the brothers and
